Wool Dryer Balls

Who is using them? How many do you put in at a time? Pros and cons? How long do they last? Is there any scent at all? I hear that they can shorten drying time considerably. Do you have a favorite brand or recommendation???

I’m interested!

I love them! Definitely cuts down on drying time, there are usually 4 or 5 in there. The ones I have are not scented and last a long time, unless the dogs get them! I just buy whichever set is cheapest on Amazon, with minimum 4 stars and lots of reviews.

I throw 4 large ones in with sheets and towels or heavy clothes. I use 2 in with delicates. There is no odor, no “wet wool” scent. It cuts my drying time down by close to 15 minutes. Bought them in Bed Bath and Beyond with coupon.

thanks for the tip! I just bought some on Amazon!

My neighbors all swear by them. I am still using the little plastic, spiky thingies, and they do a great job. I don’t use scented anything, and don’t use fabric softener, but vinegar in the final rinse cycle for softening.

If anyone could link to Amazon ones (or other store) they like that would be helpful. Are there different sizes?

Also,do they wear out? What is their life span ( ) ??? A year? A few months?

I purchased wool dryer balls in the laundry aisle at Walmart grocery. I’ve had them almost a year and they are like new. I think it was about $8 for 3.

According to my amazon history I bought these: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GA9P5P0/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and these (which are currently unavailable)

They are about the size of a baseball, but lightweight. I am not sure if there are different sizes. Amazon tells me I bought the ones in the first link in Dec 2015—they still work fine—have not fallen apart or started shedding or smell funny or anything like that. A few have been ripped to shreds by the dogs though.

I like them, too. I bought mine at Trader Joes. I also add a drop or two of essential oil (I have lavender) especially if I’m drying bedding or towel.

I’ve bought the ones at Trader Joe’s this December. They’re about the size of tennis balls, light, off-white color. They are unscented. There were 4 in the cloth bag and they were about $6 or $8, can’t remember. When you dry your clothing, a bit of the fluff comes off, and eventually, I guess they will not work. They are still soft and still seem to help speed drying time and help keep articles of clothing soft. I’ve seen them at various places. Have also seen the plastic/silicone spikey balls (at pharmacy & Target & other places). Have read some reviews of the latter that they stained some clothing so have steered clear of those. I throw them in when I do laundry and I believe they MAY be helping somewhat but I’m not positive. In any case, they seem to do no harm.

Well it would be pointless to me to buy them or use them if I didn’t think they were being helpful.

I like the advantages of shorter drying time and softer clothing. The essential oil drop idea is interesting.

I haven’t heard of these things!

I bought mine at TJ Maxx. I use 3 and I have put lavender oil on mine but H broke out in a rash so I don’t do that anymore.

I think they work, I heard that you shouldn’t use fabric softener or sheets in the new HE front loading machines so I switched.

They also help when I wash my down items.

I bought the same ones (first link) as @Mwfan1921 - post #7 - a year ago. I keep four in the dryer at all times. I wouldn’t say they still look like new but they are still in good condition. No need for new ones.

I like the essential oil idea also :-?

I keep six in the dryer all the time. Beyond cutting drying time, they keep my sheets from knotting and tangling up, especially flannel ones. They seem to make towels fluffier. Mine were a holiday gift two years ago from my dressmaker. They look like new. She said to soak them to spin with wrinkled clothes to take out wrinkles. That works pretty well. Mine are unscented. We try to avoid as many scented products as possible, especially with laundry.

So maybe the next question is…where do you get your essential oils at? I can see family members still wanting a little “good scent” coming off their clothes. I like the lavender idea.

I bought my oils at Whole Foods. You may be able to find them at Trader Joe’s as well

I remember another poster mentioning staining with the spiky balls some time back. I have not had that issue ever, as there is no infusion of water (for steaming, I assume) or oils of any sort. (I am using what I suppose are first generation.) They work great for keeping the dress shirts from creasing and needing too long a dry time, and for keeping towels aloft and suffused by heat just long enough to dry without any worry of overdrying.

Everyone I know does love the wool dryer balls. I just haven’t had a reason to change.

Do the wool balls do anything for static cling?

@Midwest67: I haven’t heard of problems with static cling from anyone in years. What do we know about what causes that? Types of fabric? Water?
