word limit on Essays really important?

so my Human Ecology essay is exactly 704 words and on the common app Cornell suggested a 500 maximum. Is it okay if i still leave it 704 words, because the essay truly reflects all my ideas coherently and i think by minimizing it, i’m bound to lose detail and the importance of what i discuss in my essay.

i heard(from a post-nyu admissions officer) if you go over the word limit too much they consider you “rude” and ignorant for not following their directions. upto 50 words its ok but if you go over more than that, youre pushing it.

As long as everyone fits on one page single spaced, it won’t look too bad, though if it’s over a page single spaced… err… it just looks long lol

Try to cut it down more. Following instructions includes respecting the word limit. A little over 500 isn’t a big deal, but 700 is pushing it.

My essay was 570 words and it was fine. I did it in Microsoft Word using double-spaced 12 pt Times New Roman and just stuck my name and SSN in the header (in case it gets lost from the Common App it’s attached to). If you can cut it down to about ~600 words and without going over two pages in those settings, I don’t think they’ll notice nor care about going over the word limit. That said, it’ll take some work to cut out those ~100 words.

Mine was 722, a bit on the long side, but it got me in. I didn’t know it was that long until my friend pointed that out to me yesterday.
I have been told very often tho’ that 600 should be max. I guess i don’t listen well

make it 500 words. im sure you can cut out a lot of words. have someone else read over the essay to help cut out unnecessary words
