You don’t know pitiful until you go your first two guesses with no letters. 
I also got so excited on my 5th guess that I actually found a word with my letters left that I didn’t see that I messed up the second letter whic was already in the correct spot.

I started with the same word.
Its a little mind blowing when you consider 26 letters to choose from and if you actively tried to avoid 5 specific letters given 10 guesses you couldn’t do it!

Was sweating bullets on this one.
We cheated today - or as we like to think of it - an interesting family variation, since two sons are with us and one DIL + GF. We decided everyone tested a first word of their own, then we’d look at everyone’s first word to decipher the answer. Using our first words (6) we had the last letter correct and two of the other letters in wrong spots - and it gave us quite a few eliminated letters. The experiment worked - answer in 2.
We’re going to try it again tomorrow since we all know experiments have to be replicated to consider them accurate.

Had two thoughts for the answer by the third row. Picked the one I thought was likelier, but it turned out to be the other one.

Sometimes I think they use a rhyming word spelling list and pick the least used option.

Same “family fun” today and it was a heartbreaker. After all 6 first words we had two letters in the correct position and a lot of eliminated letters. We actually came up with the correct word for our second choice, but then took one more look and changed our mind. Needless to say, our first thought would have been correct. If only one of us had tried it. The genetic ability to make a wrong guess runs strong in our family - even including DIL and GF!
