Work Assignment

When do we get work assignments. It seems lots of kids have already gotten theirs. Work Study is part of my financial aid; when should we expect those placements?

They will all be up by the 14th (I’m assuming that you’ve checked “Work Assignment” on The Hub). I think you’ll get an email, too, but it never hurts to check.

woah what? We get it on the 14th? How do you know?

Angel, that’s when they came out last year.

Ds got an e-mail saying he got his work assignment but when clicks on that link, all it shows is hours and not an actual job. Any ideas where to find it?

Did he log into the Hub, click Work Assignment, and look at the very top of the table–the “Title” field? It has a gray background and the rest of the table has a white background.

If that field is blank or the table is missing altogether, just call/email the Student Financial Services department and ask.

No table. Just a sentence saying something like “Your remaining hours for the 2010-11 school year is 247.” He’ll have to call … thanks for trying!

^^ My son got the same thing.

Good to know it’s not just him. Maybe they sent that e-mail prematurely. I told him to brace himself for KP duty so that anything else will seem wonderful. ;)

^^ Agreed. Told my son, “Be proud to wear the hair net!”

I got the same thing, as did a lot of kids on the facebook group - I’m assuming it’s a glitch that will be fixed soon.

I’m already practicing the hairnet, though.

Update…dining hall it is! Haha oh well. Considering that right now I clean cages for six hours a day (pet shop employee, woohoo!), I think I’ll be fine.

You and my ds will be rockin’ the hair nets together!

Everybody knows dining hall is the worst campus job, so if your kids go in there with a great attitude, the staff will love them and the job won’t be so bad after all.

If I ran the zoo, I’d make every freshman student work at least one meal in the kitchen so they know what it’s like. Hopefully the experience would give them more respect for the kitchen staff, and might even lead to less wasted food.

I’m sure I’ll survive. Youdon’tsay, I remember when you were still wondering whether or not your son should look at Carleton, so perhaps I will meet him during our shared time in the kitchens…haha.

Like I said…I currently work at a pet shop, which means that I clean gross cages and deal with obnoxious customers (there are other perks, but still). Anything will be an improvement. And hey, maybe I’ll be able to bring food back to the dorms or something.

Dining Services is a good place to start. Keep your eyes open for other opportunities when they are posted on the website or the NNB. There was one year my D had to cobble together whatever jobs she could find - dining services, taking minutes for the budget committee, making donation calls.

I bet my ds would much rather work in food services than call people to beg for money!

Actually, YDS, it isn’t as bad as it sounds. The kids who work for the Annual Fund are well-trained and only call alumni. I have alum friends who won’t give when I call because they’re waiting for the student call. Many alums really enjoy talking to current students.

That said, dining hall isn’t all bad. As someone else mentioned, getting to know the dining staff is great (I reconnected with 2 of them at my 30th reunion - they haven’t aged as much as I have:) Also there’s quite a camaraderie. There was an entertaining thread on the alumni maillist a year or so back about student jobs and, at least in hindsight, the food services had some bright spots.
