How do colleges see Work base? Do they like it or do they prefer other electives?
What is work base?
Work base is elective that you can take in your school, usually when your in 11th or 12th grade. You can leave your school early to go to work.
What does your guidance counselor tell you has been the college application experience of students from your school who do this?
If you need the money, you need the money. Provided your grades and test scores are solid, you will get into college somewhere.
I’d be wary of it if you are shooting for a top school. But it depends on what kind of colleges you are targeting.
My top choices is Pomona University or Vanderbilt University, both prestigious colleges. The thing is though I plan to start my own UNICEF inside my school so I will have to go to elementary schools early in the morning to talk to the kids. Work Base will be very usually for me to talk to the kids without any useful missing class time. (Also I never work during the work base period).
You are asking if it makes sense to a free period so that you can set up a non-profit/volunteer project. That is something you really do need to discuss with your guidance counselor. You need expert advice about using potential class time this way.
Have you completed the HS base curriculum?
If you are taking advanced English, Science, Math, SS and foreign language, then that could be your elective.
I woudl suggest taking other electives over what is essentially an EC. However, if you ffeel very strongly about it, then it is probably okay.
Okay thank you for the info! Also, I’m reconsidering taking AP classes instead of dual enrollment. I’ve been looking into it and apparently top colleges prefer AP instead of dual enrollment. My dream colleges is Vanderbilt and Pomona so they are top colleges, however, I don’t know how they each specifically perceive dual enrollment. So if there’s any Vanderbilt or Pomona alumni who got in taking dual enrollment pls let me know
It is OK for you to email the admissions offices and ask if they prefer AP or dual enrollment.
Why do you have to use your class time to market a nonprofit? Why not target Scout groups and other after school programs? Will the younger students be missing class? If I were the parent of an elementary school student, I wouldn’t want them to lose class time so that a high schooler could pad their college app. I don’t really see why you would need to miss class either.
Many elementary school in my county have an assemble before class time which will be in the morning. So if I talked to the kids for 5 to 10 minutes they won’t be missing much anyways. And if they participate in the fundraiser or the events that I set up then they will be saving kids lives. They’ll understand what privilege we have in a first world country and how we can make a difference. That’s the whole reason why I want to start a UNICEF, not for the college application but to educate kids. If some school won’t allow me to talk to them then that’s fine, I plan to make flyers. It’s just way more convenient for me to do it in the morning because in the afternoon I have work and volunteer work. I would like to talk to the kids face to face, be able to interact with them and try my best to make themfully comprehend what other kids go through around the world. This isn’t for the college application either because I plan to continue UNICEF after senior year and I’m starting the blue prints to my own club which will probably arise AFTER high school. This isn’t some scheme, I’m been applying to local nonprofits and summer leadership programs to better myself as a leader because I’ve always been the person to sit and wait for someone to start something that I’m fully capable of doing myself. This all conviently happened my junior year which looks like I’m trying to polish my resume but that’s not the cause at all. So if you see it as a personal gain, then fine, I can’t stop you. But don’t sit here and tell me that I’m wasting a child’s time by informing them that many other kids don’t have the money to get vaccinations or access to clean water and with some fundraising we can help them.
As for emailing the admission office I plan to but I just wanted to see if any alumni could answer the question for me first.
