work experience

does the type of place where you work (e.g. starbucks vs. swim instructor) make a difference in college admissions?

the reason i ask this is that i’ve seen a lot of successful HYPSM applicants who work as a swim instructor or something while those that work in retail or service are relatively low in number. is there a reason for this? or is it just coincidence?

shameless bump

Any work experience looks good. The reason why you might be seeing more of the swim instructor type is that is both allows one to further an EC, and give to the community, which is obviously something colleges like to see. So yes, it might be better, but it’s not as though a retail job is bad.

What about working as a counselor at a day camp for the whole summer? That looks good, working with kids and all, right?

It would be nice if it ties to your interest/EC. Swimm instructor job gets more pay and so is working with kids but if you don’t like to do those than it’s moot.
