I recently got hired as a technician at Jiffy Lube, but I’m beginning to have my doubts. My mom told me that it’s not a respected job, even as a summer job. Also, I’m a girl, and a small one at that, so I might just look ridiculous in such a male-dominated type of work. I’m also applying to Old Navy, so if I get that I might quit the Jiffy Lube thing. My question is two-fold: Is a stint at Jiffy Lube only for high-school dropouts, or is it fine as a summer job? ALSO, if I wanted to quit, what would be the most decent way of doing so, if there is a polite way at all?

What year are you in high school/college?

entering freshman year of college.

my friend worked at jiffy lube as a mechanic the summer before freshman year…this year he is working at Goldman Sachs. His interviewers loved that he was a mechanic…if that means anything.

i have hired technical professionals from college, i would view the jiffy lube as a great summer job …frankly better than old navy just cause it is different

you will want to look for something more in ur field prob next year and certainyl the year after … if you enjoy it go for it --it wont hurt your future

if you decide to quit --go to boss , tell him something nice about why u are leaving and the standard is to give ‘two weeks notice’ thus he and coworkers arent screwed

as to male dominated --i would recommend you should expect to be treated with respect, but dont get upset at harmless joking inuendo --thats what guys do … BUT if you feel uncomrotable or that more that innocent joking is going on --go to boss …

There’s nothing wrong with working for Jiffy Lube… doing work on cars and learning about cars will only make you a better catch for guys… because lots of guys like to discuss cars and their components.
