Work Hard/Play Hard Schools NOT big into sports?

Hockey aint minor. In the northeast and the midwest it’s beyond huge.

Brown/Dartmouth/William & Mary/Davidson all have that kind of vibe

AFAIK, people go pretty nuts for Davidson basketball.

The schools which satisfy your requirements are Tufts University, the University of Pennsylvania, George Washington Univ.,N.Y.U., and, maybe, Johns Hopkins.

If city life isn’t of absolute importance to you, Duke has EVERYTHING else you are looking for! I’ve been going to this school for two months, I know what I’m talking about! ;)

Haverford .

UPenn…

Duke is a major sports school. I don’t know what Mondo is talking about.

However, I’d also avoid Vassar (it’s not known for having much of a party environment) and BU (which is known for having a somewhat apathetic student body).

NYU and Claremont McKenna could be really good fits though.

Apathetic towards what?

Duke IS a major sports school and there is a lot of spirit for basketball games and whatnot, but Duke isn’t ‘sport-obsessed’ and you can avoid such a scene. Basketball is more so a college tradition, kind of like the ‘bonfire thing’ at Dartmouth, well not quite, but haha! You will like Duke, trust me! :D

Penn fits all your criteria, including the one about a large jewish community.

Politics, world issues…

sigh

pretty much every school is play hard, and its the top ones that stick the work hard part in there.

I second Rice.

If some are going to suggest Univ. of Pennylvania, I think Princeton is also a good choice. Princeton, in my opinion as a student and a university band member (I witness many athletic events), has a very good balance in this regard, as do many other top universities and liberal arts colleges.

Although Princeton puts considerable resources into athletics, students are definitely very independent and open-minded, students do what they want, and that is usually things they find interesting or engaging. The intellectual atmosphere, as a result, is evident. Sometimes its overwhelming on a weekend of how many things there are to do between club gatherings, concerts, plays, athletic events, lectures, symposiums etc., its really hard to choose.
Despite the challenging courseload many students undertake, its amazing to me how people have the time to organize all the things they do.
