So… can someone with experience tell me who this works? I’ve been granted WS for a small amount, so if I choose to work that off, is that the most I can pay off? Would my employer ask me to skedaddle after reaching that amount?

It depends on the employer. WS salaries are largely subsidized by the federal govt (something like 66% - 75% as far as I can recall). if the employer has sufficient funds to pay you without the subsidy he may be willing to keep you on as a non WS employee (you cannot earn more than the WS awarded as WS income). However many WS jobs are only offered because of the subsidy and the employers budget may not allow him to continue employing you.

Not quite sure what you mean by ‘working that off’. WS earnings are paid to you in a paycheck. (at my daughter’s school the paycheck is every other week). You probably will not have the money in hand when tuition etc is due but can use the money for personal expenses. FYI They are taxable income for Federal and state purposes but you do not have to pay FICA as you would with a non WS job.

After you are hired, your employer will sit down with you to work out a schedule that ensures you do not exceed your work study aid amount.
