I have a work study question. I know that the work study money is not included in tution bill. Therefore can the money we earn from work study ultimately be used in any way? or must it go towards tution and educational stuff?

Thx

i think they write you a check, so you can use it in any way. but you still owe the university money, so it doesn’t really matter.

Technically, your work-study funds aren’t taxable as financial aid and “must” be used towards costs directly related to your education. That said, Rice issues you a check; pay periods are every two weeks (assuming you work regularly).

Note how I said you don’t have to pay federal income tax on what you earn through work-study.

Now… unless you’re extremely unfortunate, no one is going to audit where you spend your money. So for pratcical purposes, you can spend it however you like; besides, you’ll incur more costs going to school than you’ll earn from work-study so you can always argue that you’ve put at least that much money towards your education costs.

Disclaimer time: “I don’t know nuttin’ 'bout no money; don’t blame me.”
