I was surprised to see this on the CUNY Honors website…

Do a lot of Macaulay students work during college?

Macaulay students receive a full scholarship and are discouraged from working due to the challenging nature of the Macaulay Honors College curriculum.

I thought many college students held part-time jobs? If students at the very top colleges around the world can hold jobs why should Macaulay Honors College discourage students from working?

I had a part time job (about 10-15 hours per week) during the fall semester of my freshman year and still had plenty of time to get my schoolwork done.

I don’t really think Macaulay is telling people NOT to work. Their curriculum can’t be THAT much more difficult than at another top school, right? They just want freshmen to understand that the college workload is very different from high school. Above all, colleges want students to focus on their schoolwork.

My suggestion is to wait a month or two. Get used to college life. If you think you can balance schoolwork and a part time job, go for it. If you can’t find the time for a job, it’s still okay. You have the rest of your life to make money.

I think it’s more of a justification for the full ride scholarship…Providing these students with the money they would be getting from a part-time job so that they don’t HAVE to work and can instead focus on their studies.
