How hard is it to get a job at Nike Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon? What are some majors to pursue if you would want to work at Nike?

I would have to say it entirely depends upon what you want to do. Nike is a huge corporation that employs a number of different professions. However, I’m positive that the biggest thing there is marketing/sales and operations/warehouse management. I just checked out NikeBiz.com, and most of the positions available were in these areas.

Otherwise, I’m sure the career possibilities there run the gamut: graphic design, art direction, fashion and apparel design, everything in R&D (materials design, biomechanics, kinesiology and sports medicine to name a few), web design, advertising, the list goes on.

So other than design school or business school (undergrad and graduate), you could major in almost anything.

Nike is one of the most desirable companies in the US to work for, according to popular rankings, so I’m sure there will be considerable competition in landing a position at their Headquarters.

I have a co-worker who worked for Nike in IT. She said it wasn’t that great. Her hours were incredibly long- they were worked to death. She DID like th environment, though.

Ryno, I’ve never worked for Nike but I am a 40 year veteran in apparel/retail.
The first question I would have to ask is why you’ve decided that Nike is your ultimate destination? Not that that’s a bad thing; Nike is a dynamic company, but so are a lot of other consumer product corporations. What is it that draws you to Nike and what area of the corporate structure are you interested in?

Nike puts a lot of emphasis on culture. Aside from having all the usual prerequisites, Nike employees are risk amenable, fit, cool and aggressive. They think young but are not necessarily young. As in any business they tend to hire people who bring something to the table that they want. They are also willing to train those who fit their image.

It also helps to get your behind to Portland. The less qualified person who lives in the neighborhood may just win out over the hire whom they have to relocate.

Depends what specifically you want to do for Nike.

Nike did a mentor program with Otis College of Art & Design for their fashion department this year, where the fashion design students designed for the World Cup Brazil team.

[Students could score goal in designing World Cup outfits: Nike works with Otis College for Brazil’s soccer team. | Marketing & Advertising > Marketing Techniques from AllBusiness.com](http://www.allbusiness.com/marketing-advertising/marketing-techniques-sponsorship/5512416-1.html)

PS I imagine Nike has to recruit from Reed, or would at least think so, since Reed is in Oregon.
