working for philip morris usa/altria before applying for MBA

How do you feel about work experience when it’s coming from a company like PMUSA or Altria Group? Is the work experience still relevant when applying to a top-notch mba program? I’ve heard that a company like this is a “resume killer” and could possibly hurt one’s chances to get into an MBA program or even a job following work at PMUSA/Altria.

I’m asking this because Altria essentially covers the cost of grad school as long as one works for them for x years following the completed mba. Is the perception of a company of this sort too negative?

thanks for the help

Seeing as I have no idea what your work experience with them is I am unable to answer the question. Are you in charge of covering up health studies reflecting that indicates smoking is bad for you?

no way lol, i’d be doing a sales/marketing position. which, of course, could be interpreted differently

Any of these companies will be fine as long as your job experience shows increasing responsibilities, leadership, resourcefulness.
