The handball at the Croatian goal was directly opposite where the referee could see. Not surprised that was missed.

Ronaldo has been hurt for a while. He’s nowhere near top speed. You can see that in the limited number of touches he had.

Robben is very good at diving for purpose. Two of his in the Chile win were on the sideline to draw a free kick - which worked because the ref really can’t see what’s really happened there - and then when he lost the ball on a run in midfield and went down because, well, you never know (and didn’t get the call). Most players just flop when anyone touches them near the box, whether that’s the smart play at that moment or not.

BTW, Ronaldo can be such a diver I used to call him Sarah Bernhardt.

My favorite dive was in the Champions League final when Eboue (I think) absolutely faked being hit when he wasn’t even touched in the box and shockingly got the penalty call. Classic throwing up of arms and falling down, though the replay showed no contact at all. Arsenal went up 1-0 on Barcelona but couldn’t hold on because they earlier gave up a pure breakaway and the goalie had to hard foul the forward outside the box. That meant a red card and they were 10 men for most of the game. Weird game.

I was wondering why Ronaldo took the free kicks for Portugal if he wasn’t in good condition. Maybe he’s still better than his teammates even when he’s not 100%.

Huffpost headline today: “Mexico Beats Cameroon, Advances to Knockout Round.”

Yesterday they posted “What was Behind the US Loss to Portugal” or something along those lines. Late in the day, I noticed they had corrected it to “Tie.”

Do none of these internet “news” outlets have editors?!?!

I don’t think it’s something to joke about. For a supposed world-class player, this type of thing is just so unacceptable, and so disappointing. Instead of the Uruguay win being celebrated, everyone is talking about the bite.

Did he bite him, though? I’m sure Italy would have liked nothing better than to have Suarez ejected. I don’t like Suarez at all, but I don’t trust any player’s claim of what another player did.

It sure looked like an imprint of teeth on the shoulder. The fact that Suarez has been involved twice previously in biting incidents, which included suspension and fines, doesn’t help his case.

Yeah, I’m only being light hearted because I don’t know for sure that it happened.

The only camera angle I saw was not very conclusive. If another angle shows absolutely that he bit the player, is there any manner of discipline for that after the fact?

The close up view in that video sure looks like Suarez leaned forward and his head went down with the mouth area on the opponent’s shoulder. Chiellini reacted immediately, so it would appear that he was bitten. As he went down the field, I saw him speaking to the official and pulling down his shirt to show what appeared to be a definite impression of teeth.

According to the commentators on CBC, FIFA can and will review and may suspend him for the remainder of the tournament.

Not a fan of the Association Football, but we happened to be in Costa Rica when they won their first two matches. The whole country was excited. It was hard to not get caught up in the national pride. Viva Los Ticos!

Is it really likely for him to be banned even for the World Cup? Star athletes seem to get so much more slack for pretty much everything they do compared to the average Joe.
