It’s halftime. What a great game so far! I have been highly critical of the US team in past World Cups, but this team looks great. Like, finally!, we can compete. Up till this team we most certainly could not.

World Cup fever has arrived. Sold out stadiums and great fan activity/viewing parties. Love to see it!

Also loving the dynamics between the Fox sports soccer announcers :joy: Zlatan vs Alexi Lalas is very funny…

My adventurous soccer son (he’s an adult, 34) was driving solo for an in-law family vacation from Ohio to New Jersey with plans to pick up other family members at Newark :airplane: in. He knew he would arrive early so unbeknownst to us until he said pictures, he did some investigating and found a Moroccan restaurant/bar in Astoria/Queens NY and made a pit stop there to watch the Morocco game!!! He can easily pass for Moroccan heritage (which he is) and had his Morocco team jersey. The pics and video he sent were amazing - everyone dressed and into the game (some dressed traditionally)!

I asked him if he felt at home - he said “absolutely - until they started talking to me in Arabic!” LOL. :morocco:

And he made it to the airport in plenty of time!

Here the viewing parties are sold out too. People standing in line for hours just to get into the fenced areas in downtown to stand shoulder to shoulder to watch. I don’t like crowds so I’m happier at home, but they look like they are having fun.

I don’t get why all the teams are singing Take Me Home, Country Roads as I’m sure none of them have ever been to West Virginia (of course John Denver hadn’t been their when he wrote the song).

News about soccer fans from other countries sharing their thoughts and experience re. all things American are fun to read.

Nobunaga’s poetic missive re. free chips and salsa stands out

U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) fans sing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” as a massive victory anthem to celebrate wins on the pitch. The song was popularized on the international soccer stage by Scottish supporters before being adopted by American fans to create a unified, celebratory crowd atmosphere. [1, 2, 3]

The tradition has caught on heavily within American soccer culture for a few key reasons:

  • The Global Soccer Influence: Soccer cultures frequently adopt classic, universally known pop songs as fan anthems. The John Denver classic became wildly popular among Scottish supporters, and American fans—who travel globally and engage with international match-going traditions—brought the concept back home. [1]
  • Collective Euphoria: After major tournament victories, the singalong allows massive crowds of nearly 70,000 fans to experience “collective effervescence,” creating a feeling of national unity and community pride. [1, 2]
  • Team and Fan Connection: The tradition has been fully embraced by the players themselves. Following major group stage wins—such as the massive 2-0 victory against Australia at Seattle’s Lumen Field—the players stayed on the pitch to belt out the chorus alongside the entire stadium. [1, 2, 3]

England fans sang Hey Jude (a player on the team is named Jude) and Wonderwall

I feel like this was popularized a few weeks ago by the WVa baseball team, which finally made it to Omaha and the CWS. They were shown singing the song after every game.

But, hey, it’s a song everyone knows so I’m glad that that song has been adopted rather than some other options.

I don’t think they are singing it about West Virginia. I feel they are singing Take Me Home as in taking the Cup/Trophy home.

Assuming you’re talking about someone else’s comment because I didn’t mention WV…..

Sorry it was to Twoinandone.

My D and her H are enjoying the World Cup immensely. Being in a city that has matches.

My D is volunteering, handing out credentials at the stadium. Yesterday they went to the fan experience to watch Netherlands v Sweden. Said it was a lot of fun. Her H played club in college so he and all his soccer buddies have a lively group chat. D is going to a game on Thursday, her H is working. And they have tickets for a round of 16. Weren’t going to buy but got FOMO.

Sounds like lots of fun being in the city where matches are being played.

I have a World Cup nit.

In looking at coverage of the games in North Texas and the glowing social media posts, I am irritated that everything is being credited to Dallas. The games are being played in Arlington, and the rodeo they are attending is in Fort Worth, a vastly superior city to Dallas.

Scots have left Boston and English took their place (England played here today). English fans were talking crap about the Scots and the locals weren’t having it! The tone was basically ‘don’t talk like that about our new best friends!!!’
