Cardinal, I think that was what I was referring to as well. Sort of like the the first down yellow line thingy they use in football.

Cardinal Fang - I agree American TV does not know how to cover soccer games. They don’t give much excitement to the viewers. Univision does better. Not only 2 long minutes saying GOOO…OOL but also with flashes (I don’t see on the World Cup yet though).

The Mexico penalty was legal. In soccer with the referees are “parents”.

Before watching the game I favored France. But after watching a few minutes my mind switched over Mexico. The France team borrows a lot of people from other countries.

ESPN has done significant changes. They are a lot quieter than they were at the beginning of the tournament (and last year at the Confed Cup)

the PK call on France was a good call, IMO. The french guy took the attacker down. There was no need for him to do that. Some fouls are smart… some are not.

I would root for Mexico since they are from our region, but I can’t because they throw bags of urine and chant “Osama” at the US team.

The call is made on the field. Recently they have added those headsets, though I’m not sure why. I mean, obviously it is so the officials can communicate, but they did fine for so many years without that. There is no video replay.

I wasn’t aware that the fifth Beatle was Germany’s coach.

coolweather,

Could you explain what you mean about France borrowing players from other countries? I don’t think there is one country that doesn’t have at least some players who play their club soccer outside their home country. Even two from KN play outside NK. Virtually all the regular players from IC play soccer for Europen teams. Messi, Higua

For World cup they have to play with the team of their nationality. Many international level players play their regular league in other countries. But for World Cup they return home. No team can “borrow” players from another country.

That Spanish ref is terrible.

ctyankee, too funny! I thoight the same in the last game Germany played. Maybe he’s from Hamburg.

I’ve got blisters on my fingers!

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/10/27/article-0-01F6FBEF000004B0-831_468x850.jpg

Germany loses to Serbia 1-0. How many more upsets will there be?

USA is up against Slovenia now!!

That loss opens up Group D.

Keeping my fingers crossed for USA.

Also, I read in The Guardian that England will have Calamity James in goal instead of Robert Green for their game later.

For those of you who have access to CBC, as it was through the Stanley Cup, their coverage is excellent.

Ways to make soccer watchable:

Get rid of the offside rule.

Make the goal at least 6 feet wider.

Require that their uniform shirts have the team name on them (not a corporate sponsor, not a little patch that nobody can see).

No referees wearing shorts and knee socks.

No old-man-taking-a-stroll-on-an-August-evening shorts like the English team wore.

Red card for writhing on the ground like you just took a cannonball to the groin, when all you got was a booboo on your elbow.

No re-inventing the ball for every World Cup…gives to many whiners an excuse.

I like many of your ideas including this one. I think futbol should go to a line (much like hockey has) if you dribble in or a pass (toward you) that crosses the line before you do … it’s all good. It’s also much easier for a referee to get correctly than the current process. Where some defender ‘happens’ to be standing’ I could give a $hite!

glowmom - About France’s team. That was my impression. It was not the team I used to see.
Back to USA - Slovania now.

Good sign. USA just scored 1 goal.

A lot of their players weren’t actually born in France. Others are from immigrant parents (including both Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry in recent years). It was written somewhere that in the last World Cup, 3 of their 23 players were of French descent.

The Algerians look like Charlie Brown in those jerseys.

Oh my, soooo exciting!!! 2-2!!!
