Edit: coverage starts at 2 pm ET; game begins at 2:30 ET

I think Sat. PM

Ghana hasn’t scored other than on PK in this tournament, right? Today’s game was the first they played w/o having at least some time of a man advantage. Bring them on!

WHEW!!! Any team but Germany…the English will have to deal with them and maybe (yes, AGAIN) - Argentina

The US was lucky that Algeria missed two opportunities very late. At the 85 minute mark a wide open Algerian in the box was calling for the ball but his teammate never passed it to him. Another shot barely missed going in. I was happy that the US players ignored the cheap shots and kept the pressure up.

No complaints about the group the US is paired with in the knockout round and potential quarterfinals.

^^^^And I guess Algeria was lucky the US missed some very good opportunities also, including the goal called back for a questionable offsides. There were several other near goals as well.

I feel the US played the better game and deserved the win. It’s a hard road ahead, but I hope they can take tonight to enjoy their win.

whew… that was close. You can see the video of the goal here: [Dan Levy - This is entirely amazing. - TwitVid](http://www.twitvid.com/K9CVS) I enjoy Jay DeMerit rolling over the celebration pile, and the guy in the purple FIFA vest, who might be the US conditioning coach.

US definitely played better than Algeria and deserved to win. Only 2 days off to rest the legs for Ghana, the team that knocked us out with the help of some questionable refereeing in 2006. US will need to bury their chances much better than they did today.

maybe saturday morning we will be able to hear the hilarious English cheer in the game against Germany (probably not over the vuvuzelas though):

There were ten German bombers in the air,
There were ten German bombers in the air,
There were ten German bombers, Ten German bombers,
There were ten German bombers in the air,
And the RAF from England shot one down,
And the RAF from England shot one down,
And the RAF from England, The RAF from England,
And the RAF from England shot one down,

There were nine… (etc)

If I never hear a vuvuzela again (and when I first saw one it was called a plastic horn–199? at a Galaxy game [sarcasm on, did not know plastic was an ancestral South African thing, sarcasm off]) it will be too soon. It sucks not to hear the crowd reacting to the game.

Go USA!!! Great job by our guys today.

The England crowd was surprisingly audible this morning. Ten German Bombers has been officially discouraged recently though.

While I do like to hear the people singing, the vuvuzelas don’t bother me. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard them during soccer games, but certainly it’s the loudest. I did manage to hear rhe Mexicans singing “Cielito lindo” and the English fans booing the other day, though.

The Japan/Denmark game should be interesting, and I’m pulling for the Kiwis in their group.

Italy was so bad. not a real shot on goal.

New Zealand has great chance to be in.

I’m surprised that the current world cup champions and runner ups, Italy and France, have not one a game in this tournament.

Italy didn’t deserve to go on, IMO. I’m sorry for NZ, though, a country with only 25 professional footballers.

Italy will go home in shame, but not the Kiwis. Valient effort.

This will make France feel better.

Over at fivethirtyeight.com (blog, sorry, can’t link) Nate (the Great) Silver says home-continent teams have a considerable advantage. So Italy and France got a boost in the last World Cup from playing in their own continent – but not this time.

Home-continent advantage is bad news for USA, since they’re playing Ghana this round.

I wonder if the Italian team awaits another rotten vegetable medley when their plane arrives back home …

This is so funny …

CF,

I agree with you about the US being at a disadvantage. On paper, it’s close, but the stadium is likely to be really partial to Ghana, but who can really blame them. I’ll just hope Sam’s Army is up to the task.

Funny, ct yankee!

We like the underdog role.
