World Cup fever!

Do you watch hockey? Sudden death overtime! Way better than a shootout.

My daughter had been on soccer teams for 10-11 years- sometimes two teams ( school & rec league)
Played thru January at times- and it gets cold!
a shootout isn’t representative of the team strenght- sometimes I think a tug of war would be better!
:)

A whole lot more ethical than the German keeper doing his best and succeeding in fooling the ref that Lampard’s kick was short; not to mention all the flopping throughout the tournament. There is so much dishonesty in the game; it’s disgraceful.

Why did he DO that ( ESP/PAR…pull that guy down)…! Nice block ! Another pk…My son is FREAKING OUT…in his brand new expensive Spain jersey…

GOOOOOAAAALLL!

OH NOOOOO…

Who says goalie is not a glory position?

GOOOOAAAL! Amazing play! How can this not be exciting?

Viva Villa!

After seeing this, my opinion of the beneficial effects of World Cup fever have declined.

[Brazil fan commits suicide: Sport: Sport: 2010 World Cup: National News](Brazil fan commits suicide | Sport)

I just made a  face. :(

I wonder how they determined that THAT was the reason. Surely there is plenty to be despondent about in Haiti.

^My mother wept like a child when they lost. My uncle pulled over on the road and openly sobbed upon hearing the news. Neither one of them cries regularly, and it was shocking to witness.
Perhaps the circumstances of the young man’s life created a situation where Brazil’s loss was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

So maybe the World Cup was the only light for him.

Sad.

But Congrats to Spain!

So last four; Spain, Netherlands, Uruguay and Germany

Great games today. The fitness and skill of these players…Fantastic. Villa’s goal was shown from the back of the net. The speed of the ball…Tremendous. Just great games. American football is so slow…the players have to rest every 6 seconds…;)

After half an hour without scoring? How long should they go on like that?

Whew!!! That was close. I’m so happy Spain progressed, but do not think they will beat Germany without better crosses. First real semi-final for Spain. Will skype with my kids when they get back from the plaza outside Bernabeu.

“American football is so slow…”

Only with the running games. I love the passing games.

I do like American football…

soccer had sudden death overtime, it was called “golden goal,” but they got rid of it.

Hockey has ruined itself with a shootout.

I enjoy American Football tons… I don’t like that the ball is only in play for 12 minutes during a 3 hour television window. And I really don’t like it when they score a TD, kick the PAT, go to commercial, kickoff, go to commercial again…

Here’s a cool graphic that some of you might enjoy: [Onde atuam os 736 jogadores da Copa 2010 : Especial - Esportes - Copa 2010 - Estado.com.br …](http://www.estadao.com.br/especiais/2010/06/copa_jogadores.shtm)

the website is in portuguese, but the graphic is clear. It has all the WC teams across the top, and across the bottom it has flags that represent a country’s domestic leagues. It shows where the WC players play their club football. You can mouse over the flags to isolate the information related to it.

Interesting to note that all the English play in England, Germans in Germany, and Italians in Italy. You can click the “Copa 1994” at the top of the picture to see how much it has changed since the 94 WC.

117 WC players play in England, 84 in Germany, 80 in Italy, 59 in Spain, 47 in France, and 33 in Holland.

I hate shootouts in hockey too, soccerguy, but at least there are no shootouts in the playoffs. Just sudden death overtimes, until someone scores.

A couple of years ago, my Sharks played a playoff game with four overtimes. Nothing better than your team winning in sudden death. Nothing worse than your team losing in sudden death.

It’s strange. Every time I see Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands player), I can’t help but feel he looks like he could be a brother or cousin of Joran van der Sloot. Something about his eyes, I think.

I had similar association too. And when seeing the Netherlands team I usually think of “van der Shot” and “van der Sloot”.
