World Cup Soccer 2018

^^^And shoots without looking at the goal.

Nice cross-one touch match winner for Argentina. Argentina seemed to dominate the 2nd half play.

What an exciting game (Argentina v. Nigeria). Seemed to be a lot of arguing with the ref.

I think in yesterday’s Columbia game, the ref went to VAR and determined there was a hand ball in the box and ruled it a PK. Today, a somewhat similar hand ball in the box, but the ref ruled that the touch wasn’t deliberate. I didn’t think either touches were deliberate and neither should have been ruled a hand ball. In general, the consistency of calls has been lame.

While I think Argentina deserves to move on, they will not survive for very long, if they don’t fix their problems. One of which cannot be fixed. And that’s talent or lack thereof. One of the other issues is their formation 2-3-3-2, which is great for attacking, but not so good for D.

Croatia beat Iceland today!

I noticed almost all Iceland players have the name ending with “SON”.

I was in Iceland last fall and found out about naming in Iceland then. There is info about naming if you Google it. I’m disappointed that Iceland lost today. I’m rooting for England!

Iceland used to belong to Denmark and the same thing is super common in Denmark but with an -sen on the end. You’ll see in other Scandinavian countries too. It basically means “son of”. You’ll also see names ending in -dottor or -dotter.

Naming is different in Iceland. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icelandic_name

Naming is different there. You generally are your father’s first name, plus -son, or -dottir. The names therefore shift every generation. Makes tracking family trees very different.

Three of the best female CrossFit athletes in the world are from Iceland and their last names all end with -dottir. I thought it was a bit strange, but now I understand.

Sad for Iceland, but happy for Croatia. Our SIL is probably going nuts.

Glad to see folks are still following the WC despite the foregone conclusion for the entire affair (that of course being another champioship for my 3 Lions!).

Come on England! :D/

Wednesday’s lineup:

10AM - Group F

Mexico v Sweden
South Korea v Germany

All 4 teams can still progress. Germany has never been eliminated in the group stage. Sweden needs a two goal win to progress. Germany needs to at least match Sweden’s results to advance

2PM - Group E

Switzerland v Costa Rica
Serbia v Brazil

Switzerland only needs a draw to advance. Costa Rica is already out of the running.

@sushrito you’re off about Australia/Peru and France/Denmark but even so right about Arg and Croatia. So I guess I can say goodbye to my college fund now.

As for the fouling/red cards/yellow cards in this WC, I certainly think quite a few yellows so far could’ve been reds. But hey, no Robben this time :).

What do you all think about VAR? Is it making the WC fairer?

@doschicos pretty sure Iran and Morocco won everyone’s respect.

What did everyone think about the elbow Bjarnason (unsure of spelling but he looks like Thor) took to the nose?

I am glad Germany is out. World cup goals are no longer controlled by the top %1 of countries.
South Korea deserves medal for great effort.

Mexico is a fraud too. This group was supposed to be one of the groups of death and it now turns out that Germany is this old and slow team, like Argentina.

I’m completely distraught now. I can’t believe Germany, the freakin’ #1 team in the world, is out before the Round of 16. Wow. X_X

Germany screwed up, but how does Germany get Mexico, Sweden and Korea in their bracket, but Russia moves forward playing Saudi Arabia and Egypt? Yep, sour grapes. :((

Mexico muffed it up too. This is by far, the strangest WC, I can remember.

Well, that would seem to suggest that they are in fact NOT the greatest team in the world.

“This is by far, the strangest WC, I can remember.”

Totally.

I just don’t want Russia to win.
