While I didn’t use the phrase “greatest team”, nonetheless, quite the statement of the obvious. :-j
Now, I’ll have to root for England or maybe Brazil or Argentina. Looking forward to watching the 2nd half of Brazil game later at lunch.

My poor dog has been so confused by my screams and sobs over the past two days. Argentina advances, so those tears stopped. But today, with Germany, poor dog had nowhere to go to escape the misery.
I just saw this fact/statistic. Germany has missed the elimination round for the 1st time since 1938, which seems on the surface to be self explanatory. I bet the Germans are feeling like the US now. =))
About the only teams that have looked strong so far are Uruguay, Croatia and maybe France.
I think I’m rooting for Sweden now:

Heading to Berlin on Sunday. We will probably see the bonfires of World Cup merchandise from the plane. Ugh.
What about Portugal?
Speaking of Uruguay, how has Suarez behaved in the years since his World Cup bite?
Goals Against = 4.
He seems to be reformed of his biting ways.
That morning group of games could not have gone worse for my rooting interests… and I like South Korea and Mexico… Oh well, maybe I’ll now be able to pick up one of those German away kits for cheap. (I love that green jersey!)
[Although I’m disappointed, Germany did not deserve to advance – nothing seemed to really click for them this tournament.]
@sushirito, very much enjoying your insight and analysis in this thread. You know your football.
This WC, however, isn’t strange when looked at from the proper perspective: 3 Lions and Destiny! :)>-
Everyone may now resume the global celebration for Sweden’s massive win today (grandmother was Swedish; our second favorite side).
You’re up by one near the end of the game in world cup play…and you commit a blatant foul in the box on a player making a run.
Why…really…
It’s not hard to see why Suarez would bite opponents. His teeth remind me of those of the Matt Dillon character in Something About Mary.
The 2nd half of Brazil-Serbia game started off pretty good, with Serbia relentlessly attacking and looking like they were going to score to tie it up at 1-1. But then Brazil scores and the final 15-20 minutes of the game were essentially a snooze mixed in with a few missed opportunities by Brazil only because Serbia was sending everyone forward to score.
Once England is done with its group play tomorrow against Belgium, after playing such football stalwarts like Panama and Tunisia :)), maybe we’ll get a better read on their potential for winning the WC.
Looking forward to England-US match. Uh, on NOVEMBER 15, 2018. :D/
Despite his biting incidents, I like Suarez. Incredible player.
On a soccer-related side note, did anyone else see the documentary Nossa Chape that aired on Fox Sports tonight. It was about the rebuilding of the Chapecoense soccer team after the 2016 plane crash that killed almost its entire team and coaching/management staff. The film is very interesting and, of course, moving. It looks like there are multiple airings throughout the weekend.
@JazzyTXMom, I just watched. So moving…
Thursday’s Schedule
10AM - Group H
Senegal v Colombia
Japan v Poland
Poland is already out and the other three are battling to advance.
2PM - Group G
England v Belgium
Panama v Tunisia
England and Belgium have already advanced so this group and these matches will be less exciting.
No matches on Friday so time to catch up on stuff.
Round of 16 starts on Saturday.
I am a fierce Messi fan and supporter, and when Germany beat Arg in the 2014 WC Final, I was sure I could never support the German football team again. I was 12 and distraught, and now I’m 16 and a lot more mature, thankfully, so I have come to appreciate the Germans and their entire WC 2014 campaign. I also have a soft spot for Muller, who seems like a nice person, both on and off the field.
So yesterday was NOT fun. However, I love a bit of drama in football, and damn those Mexican fans hoisting South Korean fans on their shoulders and running around the stadium in droves had me in stitches. Fun times, these.
Germany gave a very poor account of themselves yesterday, I’m afraid.
@DodosAreDead
Did you see the clip on ESPN of the South Korea consulate celebrating with Mexican fans in front of the embassy? It’s nice to see happy people and culture mingle.
@sly123 I didn’t, but I saw vids of Mexican fans hoisting S Koreans on their backs and parading them through the streets outside the stadium. Warmed my heart.
