World Cup Soccer 2018

I’m really glad Sweden won today. Now hoping for a win by England!

This game is ridiculous. The U.S. ref has totally lost control of the game.

A tremendous amount of nonsense and emotion for absolutely nothing. The players are selling and the ref seems to be buying, at least some of the BS. Shut up or get up and play the game.

The flopping is out of control…

England wins in PK’s 4-1. I didn’t see either OT, but just tuned in for the PK’s (and 2nd half) only. I thought England was going to muff it up for sure.

I saw the game getting out of control in the first half. Didn’t get to watch the second half. Anything in particular happen, or just more of the same that was going on during the first half?

Glad to see England advance.

The ref began handing out yellow cards like he was handing out free meal coupons to Taco Bell in the 2nd half. So, as I mentioned above, the early stages of 2nd half had players falling and arguing everywhere on the pitch and then it seemed to slow down once the yellow cards began to accumulate.

England appears to have exorcised its PK demons. Great finish!

Correction to my post above. England won 4-3 in PK’s. Not 4-1. I’ll give myself the 8-|

Nrdsb4, England had a 1-0 lead until a few minutes before stoppage time when Colombia scored. Took the wind right out of England’s sails through extra time. Colombia had all the momentum. England looked stunned when they got their last PK past the goalie. To me, they looked like they’d assumed they had lost.

And in other news, Alex Ovechkin will have the Stanley Cup in Moscow for public viewing shortly before Sunday’s game with Croatia. This may supply opportunities for partying on Saturday and Sunday nights!

The PK curse is gone! As I keep saying, This is our year!

Really bummed we have to beat Sweden on our way to the championship, but it is what it is. Hope my dear grandmother will forgive me from heaven this Saturday. Well, shouldn’t be too hard, as she knows I could NEVER root against Sweden; I’ll just be rooting for my 3 Lions

Come on, England!

The world is upside down.
Germany out, Argentina out, Spain out, Portugal out, Italy was never even there, and England win on penalties!?
What’s next, horses turning around and eating themselves?

I am also bummed it is England against Sweden. I had a Swedish grandmother and an English grandfather. Oh well.

Too bad Columbia couldn’t play James Rodriguez!

I seem to be a part of the minority that was supporting Colombia, if only because I was against England winning. But this WC certainly hates seeing me happy, as England advanced on penalties. Even if Colombia was the team who actually managed to get a field goal.
On the extremely off chance that England wins the WC, I plan on boycotting every international football match for the next 2 years lol that’s how against them winning I am.
Yesterday’s ref was horrible though, and the players took full advantage.

Field goal?

I find it interesting how narrative ultimately defines outcome. To me, England did not so much win as narrowly escape defeat. Colombia did not have their star, James Rodriguez, an excellent transition playmaker who had been brilliant in previous matches setting up his strikers, threading passes through heavy traffic. As the game wore on and subs came in, it was clear that Colombia fresh, fast bench was superior to England’s. Colombia’s late game comeback was excellent. England was very lucky to squeak by. I think Sweden will be a huge challenge for them.

As I said pages ago, soccer can be a “flukey” sport, where an accidental own goal can be the game winner. And the best players get hurt. The best ability is availability! The best team doesn’t always win, IMO, cough, cough Russia. ;))

No games till Friday. :((

Interesting view on this year’s WC as whole:
