As I mentioned before, Argentina is long-time favorite in our home, even before Messi. But, how can one not root for Iceland and their story and their fans?
Also, the Volkswagen commercial is wonderful in a silly way.

Interesting, Peru has not competed in the WC in 36 years. It seemed like the entire stadium sang the Peru national anthem. The match (Peru-Denmark) announcer has had too much coffee. :))

I actually liked the play-by-play announcer for the Peru-Denmark game, but the color analyst wasn’t very good.
Croatia vs. Nigeria next. Nigeria’s team looks like a U23 youth team.
It’s like March Madness. Perfect timing. No break between celebrating the Warriors win in the NBA Finals and the WC. I love the nonstop action.
And 8:00 AM PST tomorrow, Germany vs. Mexico.

Psshh… I don’t care about the USA and men’s soccer. I just want to see well-played, beautiful games and they haven’t been able to meet that caliber yet, even when they are there, IMO. Nationalism and sports hold little interest for me.
Just checking in from Croatia after watching them win 2-0 against Nigeria at a local bar! Our family trip was timed perfectly to be able to see this and the upcoming game against Argentina. Fun to see all the local excitement in this beautiful little country.

Would love to see a trip report when you get back as I’ve heard it is a great country to visit.
Our daughter, who lives in Copenhagen, snapchatted the game as they were watching on a big screen in the soccer stadium. Surprisingly Denmark won (against Peru). She was excited.
Nigeria didn’t look right to me today. They just seemed a bit unready for the moment to me.

Mexico up 1-0 at the half. Mexico looks like the better team thus far. Germany turning the ball over and defending poorly.
Agree that Mexico is looking good. Solid passing/possession.
Germany is very susceptible to the counter. Their backline is unorganized and their midfield is slow. I’m dumbfounded.
They’ve been playing better though in the past 20 minutes. I was thinking I jinxed Mexico with my previous comment. Overall, it has been a good match.
Would it be a sin to have my mind on the WC during church this am? Probably…

And they did! Great, fun game. Loved the crowd and Mexican team response to the win. German team was classy despite the loss.

If you didn’t know the final result of the game and just looked at the stats, who would say “deserved” to win the game? But, Mexico played a great game.
