World Cup Soccer 2018

For a little perspective on the England-Panama score/game, the US beat Panama 4-0 in October 2017 in CONCACAF qualifiers. :((

Just returned from a week-long vacation in Mexico and was able to watch Mexico’s first two games with Mexican fans. That earthquake inducing goal against Germany was epic!

My brother is working a job in Columbia and is in a very high energy pub right now watching the game. Sent me video of the crowd reaction to the goal. Our last name is also the last name of one of the Columbia players. Hope the guy has a good showing. :o

Interesting coincidence: The guy with our last name has the same number jersey my brother always wore in his long soccer career. Not pro career or anything approaching it, but 5 years old through college.

@Nrdsb4 And Colombia just scored another goal! How exciting for your brother to be watching in a pub there!

Poland is out. Columbia, Senegal, and Japan all are in tough positions. I will root for Japan, the only asian country in the game.

Colombia.

Senegal

Soccer rules are complicated. England will play Belgium on Thursday and if the game is a draw they will be tied for the group (including goal difference) the next deciding factor is ‘fair play’ meaning the team with the least fouls will win the group. The team who finishes second will have an easier run to the finals.
Will England or Belgium play each other to win or lose?

Here’s the rules:

There’s a very good possibility that as well as Mexico has played so far, if they lose to Sweden they are out.

@doschicos, thanks for link, and for starting this great thread for that matter.

@sly123, I’m mildly embarrassed to admit I didn’t know about the fair play tiebreaker. Cheers

Monday’s matches - today the schedule moves to 4 matches a day. Unfortunately a pair of matches are played at the same time but no very early morning games for USA viewers.

10AM
Saudi Arabia v Egypt
Uruguay v Russia

2PM
Spain v Morocco
Iran v Portugal

Go Uruguay!

Anyone know why this happens? My best guess is bc many groups are usually decided by the last group stage game. Still seems odd given that the first two sets of group matches did NOT overlap…

Late to the thread. I am enjoying the WC so far and slowly watching more as I deal with work and family committments. I did not play growing up but all three kids did and I ended up coaching them on about 20 rec teams when under 10. Youngest is still playing U16 travel club and HS. I will miss watching him terribly when he hangs up the cleats.

As for the WC, I am rooting for Germany and England, with France a distant third (roughly mirroring my genetic makeup).

In jury duty today (they think Price is Right is ok for jury room tv over soccer!), but dvring Spain to watch later.

Re: my brother watching the World Cup in Columbia:

I just remembered that during the last WC, he was living in Berlin while working a job there (my brother is a location production accountant-i.e. the on site accountant when a movie is filming overseas). He sent us a photo of himself in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Pariser Platz during the big celebration after Germany’s win. He said it was so fun to be a part of the WC journey during his time there.

@USCWolverine My understanding of why they have games at the same time is because they are in the same group and results lead to qualifying for the next stage so the teams play at the same time so that they can’t easily alter their play based on results of other teams - trying to tie intentionally for example. Yes, like you said, it is because it is the last group stage game.

Yes, they play the 3rd game at the same time, so teams don’t “monkey around” (technical term) with the final seedings/results. This rule is also in place for youth tournaments.

I loved the outcome of the Uruguay-Russia game, 3-0 in favor of the South Americans. BTW, when did Poland become that bad. Columbia just wiped them out on Sunday.

@vistajay The Price Is Right? Is it vintage Bob Barker or the new version with Drew Carey hosting? (jk) :))

@sushiritto , not watching, LOL. The fellow potential jurors sitting around me are entertainment enough.

@sushiritto Does the scheduling at this stage muck up your lunchtime viewing?
