I’ll be the first to say that when I was super young, I thought Harvard was in England. Anyways, I really wonder, how much of the world actually knows where Harvard is? I don’t just mean in the Northeast or in Mass. But, I mean, specifically, where is Harvard located? I don’t really care about the educated part o the world, but the world in general…actually, narrow that down to the US in general…does anyone know what % of the population knows where Harvard is? Everyone knows the name, but does everyone know the location?

It’s in Ohio, right?

In all seriousness though, some people do get confused about Harvard’s location. A few weeks ago, my cousin asked me if it were in New Haven (ouch!). And it does throw people off when I say Harvard is in Cambridge instead of saying it is in Boston. Ah, Harvard.

Harvard is in Cambridge. One of my friends thought that Harvard was just one school within Cambridge university in England. In AUS, most people know of it but few really know where it is other than somewhere in the US. One person even told me that Princeton was in Canada and another told me that Boston was in the southern part of the US.

Honestly- before this whole admissions process I knew Harvard was in the US, Yale was the the US and etc etc but as to where they all were was quite a shock. I didn’t expect all those huuuuuge cities like Boston, DC, NY, NJ, Philly to be soo close. It almost scares me lol.

Princeton and Yale are actually not in super urban areas. And Harvard’s location in Cambridge makes it feel separate from Boston. People here talk about “going into Boston for the day.”

And Cornell is located in the middle of nowhere

And NJ isn’t a city … its a state. :)

oops typo. What are the two big cities Princeton is close to? One is Philly and the other is NY?

What? Do you mean how many know the street address?

Actually, I don’t think most people NEED to know exactly where it is located. Why would they? I bet if you mailed a letter from some remote country addressed simply to “Harvard University, USA”, it would get delivered.

Hell if I get into Harvard I’d just book a plane to Boston and ask any cabbie for Harvard and I’m sure they’d know where it is.

the only address you need to remember right now is:
8 Garden Street, Cambridge MA 02138.

So sad that I remember that, but that address was my life all last fall pretty much.

8 garden street, cambridge ma 02138 … (writing down into a notebook) … whats that for? Main admin building?

That’s the office of undergraduate admissions. You should write that on the envelope as well, since undergrad admissions is not the only office in the building.

Mmm good point. Slap in a “Byerly Hall” and you are set to go.

Honestly, just say the name “Harvard” and people will bow down to you. It doesn’t matter whether people know the address, they know the name and the reputation - that’s enough.

I was in India with my parents one time, and I was on a public city bus. We were talking about colleges (in English), and when my father said the word “Harvard,” EVERYONE on the bus turned around and looked at us. EVERYONE. And I am pretty sure that some of the people on the bus cannot even speak English.

Go to Harvard, you’ve got it made.
Livin’ in the shade,
With four or five estates.

The cabbie will ask you where in Harvard you want to go, because the campus is reasonably large. I usually told them Johnston Gate because it’s one of the main entrances to the Yard right off Harvard Square and very close to the part of campus where I needed to be.

mmmm. i so wanna go to Princeton … oh wait this is the Harvard forum … I mean I so wanna go to Harvard :p

How big is Harvard’s Campus anyways? I hear its like in the middle of town with a few normal streets running through it. Is that true?

And half the campus is across the Charles River in Boston.

Yes, the undergraduate campus in Cambridge is made up of a few self-contained university areas with shopping/restaurant/entertainment streets in between.

lol I thought everyone knew where Harvard is, I’ve lived right near it all my life. Enough tourists find it anyway
