^ That’s great but doesn’t mean that trans student can’t use the bathroom marked girls and boys.
It also wasn’t a compromise as CA law and LA Unified School District’s bathroom policy allows tudents to use the bathrooms of the gender they identify with. The gender neutral bathroom is just another choice the students have.
I wonder if those same “Christian” bakers refusing to bake cakes for gay weddings would have an issue with a gay hair stylist refusing to do their hair for their wedding. Anyway, this thread had gotten WAAAAAY off track re gay wedding cakes and Christian bakers. It was initially about being worried for LGBT students in states now legalizing discrimination against them. Glad it’s finally back on track!
As I mentioned previously, my daughter will be attending University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign in the Fall. There are now several “gender inclusive” dorm options (with gender neutral bathrooms) on campus, including one floor of the dorm my daughter will be living in.
"I wonder if those same “Christian” bakers refusing to bake cakes for gay weddings would have an issue with a gay hair stylist refusing to do their hair for their wedding. "
That’s apropos of nothing since they might decide not to patronize a gay hair stylist in the first place (believing it to be immoral). Which they have a right to do. As a consumer I have a right not to patronize a business because the owners are (fill in the blank). That may make me an ugly human being but that’s not illegal. After all, plenty of people don’t patronize Chik FIL A or Domino’s Pizza for similar reasons.
Good piece detailing why we shouldn’t waste our time arguing against the bathroom law on the merits, because it’s not a law based on the merits. If NC officials truly cared about womens’ safety, there are many constructive things they could do. Banning trans women from womens’ rooms is not one of them.
“I want everybody here in the United Kingdom to know that people of North Carolina and Mississippi are wonderful people, are hospitable people, they are beautiful states, and you are welcome, and you should come and enjoy yourselves. And I think you’ll be treated with extraordinary hospitality. I also think that the laws that have been passed there are wrong, and should be overturned. They’re in response to politics in part, and part some strong emotions that are generated by people. Some of whom are good people, but I just disagree with when it comes to respecting the equal rights of all people, regardless of sexual orientation. Whether they’re transgender, or gay or lesbian. And, although I respect their different viewpoints, I think it’s very important for us not to send signals that anybody is treated differently.”
I’ve been having a hard time putting into words why this law p*****s me off so much but THIS is it.
Laying my cards on the table: I was forced into a unisex bathroom by a grown man and sexually assaulted as a young teen. I have talked about this before on here so it’s nothing new. And oh look, I live in a state that has never even considered a law like this. If the laws against assaulting people didn’t stop my assailant, you can bet your last dollar that bathroom rules weren’t going to stop him. Plus, it was a unisex bathroom so these rules wouldn’t have applied anyway.
So then I hear a certain presidential candidate talk about “protecting” girls from grown men in bathrooms (always “girls” and always “men”) it makes me want to scream. You ACTUALLY want to protect women and children? Strengthen the VAWA (which this same presidential candidate voted against), pass comprehensive gun reform, massively increase funding to IPV shelters, give cities and states money for the tens of thousands of unprocessed rape kits. There are MANY things you can do to actually protect people and to ignore these and then hide behind a shield of “BUT THINK OF THE CHILDREN” makes my blood boil.
And they have a followup (him and two other friends/comedians from Tennessee) about what concert NC deserves now that the Boss has deserted the state. It’s a long read, but I laughed do hard I was gasping for air!
@greenwitch omg funny! separate bathrooms for catholic priests, the soup cans, bro country show, bud light ball caps, Dwayne from Durham the cover song specialist from Applebee’s … Im rolling laughing that was great
I try to do reverse boycotting of companies that support causes I believe in. I made Tanqueray my go-to alcohol after they sponsored the first Boston-NY AIDS Ride in the 90’s, at a time when other major corporations were still shying away from public association with AIDS. Guess I’ll be hitting Target this week.
I too will shop more at target and I started buying Chobani yoghurt after that controversy.
I just think it’s pretty ironic that the NC law HB2 wanted private businesses to make its own decisions re bathrooms, and now that Target has done just that people are losing their minds.
Target’s statement: “Hey guys, fyi the bathroom policy is the same as it’s always been.”
Crazy people: “OMG we’re suddenly all at risk even though nothing’s changed and the policy is the same as it’s been everywhere else in the entire country in recorded history. Must boycott!”
