So I made a huge mistake in my college application process that will probably cost me admission to colleges that I am qualified for. I applied to NYU Tisch Film EDI and because I am both a competitive applicant and I attend their summer program, I believed my chances of admission were very high. I knew USC SCA was my second choice, and upon hearing that their deadline was January 10th, I knew I’d have time in case of rejection to apply to their school. Unfortunately upon rejection for NYU, devastation hit even harder when I learned that you needed to meet the December 1st deadline to be considering for Film at USC.

The point I’m getting at here is, I’m not sure if I should still apply. I found another major, Public Relations at Annenburg, that I would be interested in pursuing for a year and then attempt to transfer to SCA. Unfortunately, my ECs all correlate with Film and Television, so I’m concerned USC will not admit me due to lack of commitment to an intented major. Not to mention, my SAT score is in NYUs range but not USCs. I believe I’m capable of 2100 for January 2011 SAT…but that’s nothing stellar either.

I’m almost done my application, but I hate to submit it and get my hopes up if my chances are incredibly slim. If anyone knows of any thing I could do (maybe SCA considers on case by case basis after the deadline?) or if they believe it would be worth applying to Annenburg (I heard it’s one of the harder one to get into) then please let me know. Thank you

I’m not sure about SCA making any exceptions regarding the deadline. When we visited and toured a week ago the Director of Admissions for SCA told us they had nearly 1200 applicants for 60 spots in Film Production. But, if you’re nearly done with the app, it seems there’s no harm in trying for Annenburg. It would seem worth trying rather than always wondering.

megakel,
You have nothing to lose by applying to Annenberg. It is a fantastic school. The Annenberg Foundation just donated another $50 million to build a state of the art new complex. Earlier in the year $5 million was donated for scholarships.

If admitted to Annenberg you can take courses in SCA. There MAY be an opportunity to transfer later into SCA, but a student will have to submit portfolio, SC grades, etc. Check madbean’s posts for more information regarding SCA.

Was the subject of reach, match and safety schools not discussed when you met with your high school counselor?

My suggestion is to apply to Annenberg. CSA is beyond highly competitve. The committee would wonder why you did not bother to learn the deadline date. There are 1200 applicants who had their documents in on time.

You might actually be a better fit for Communications… I did a lot of production, editing, and such related work in HS, and I know if I weren’t in SCA, Communications is what I would’ve have chosen. Personally, I feel like Production at SCA and Communications at Annenberg share a lot in common, just that the former is more geared toward entertainment and the latter toward information. Annenberg is damn kickass.

If you really like SC, you should def enter as an Annenberg student, see how you like it, then decide whether or not to transfer to SCA later on. Just my $0.02
