Worth applying?

My school limits the number of applications to 6, so I have to pick schools wisely. I have decided to apply to schools where I have a chance because I don’t want to end up being rejected from all schools. Do I have a decent enough shot to warrant applying?

International Applicant.

I’d say you definitely have a good chance, so in a sense, yes, it would be worth applying. But, if you must limit yourself to only six applications you have to be able to create a concise list including safeties, so the real question is, after including a safety or two, is Duke high enough on your list to claim one of the four remaining spots?

Your stats look good, so with the 6 maximum applications limit, I would recommend applying to 2 “reach, dream” schools, 2-3 schools that you think you have a pretty good shot at getting in, and 1-2 schools as “safeties” where you’re 100% sure you’ll get in. I know it’s extremely competitive for international applicants, so I can’t tell you for sure if Duke would be your reach school or one of those where you think you have a pretty good shot at getting in. I don’t mean to scare you, but realistically, I don’t think that Duke is a safety school for anyone, regardless of one’s stats because of it being a crapshoot for many students. Just keep in mind, that all 6 of the colleges you apply to, you really picture yourself there and would love to go there if that was your last option. Good luck!

I’d definitely apply - you’d seem to fit in perfectly at Duke :).

Like others have mentioned, I’d apply to probably 2, maybe 3 reaches, 2 matches, and 1-2 safeties.

Yea duh you should. Good chance too.

Thanks a lot. How reputed is Duke’s Economics department?

Everyone hates duke…

jk
that’s just me…

Your stats are great, Duke would be good for you.

as a safety I recommend Wofford!!! Great school!

OP, are you interested in finance/management or economics in academia? Duke is certainly great for both, but is more known as a finance powerhouse.

Finance, moving into investment banking, to be honest. If I get into Wharton, I’ll go work right after undergraduate. If I get into somewhere else, I’ll try and do graduate studies at either Wharton or Harvard Business School.

If you go to Duke, you can definitely go straight to IB, just as you would have after Wharton.

4 of our top 5 employers are big name consulting/finance firms. Going to Wharton won’t result in a significant difference in job placement and certainly should not dictate whether you’d end up going to business school or not. Pick the school you want to go to because you like the environment, or because you fit there, etc. All these schools you’re looking at will get you to the same place pretty much. I have plenty pf friends who turned down Wharton for Duke because they enjoyed the Duke environment better.

Hope that helps :)
