Hello! My son’s finally sorted out what he wants to do … well, actually he’s known for a long time that he’s wanted to go to law school, it was more the matter of what he’d study on the way to getting there. DS is a graduating high school senior, who will be attending a state school. He’s gotten into the honors program, and he plans to major in Economics with a minor in English. Because he comes in with so much AP credit … best we can figure 28-31 credit hours, of course depending on him passing this next round of exams, but he’s passed them all thus far … so a reasonable assumption, he could do an accelerated program, which allows him to receive his B.A in Economics, as well as an M.S. in economics and still get out in 4 years. He figures on going the thesis route. He’s comfortable with this so far, although he hasn’t seen the academic advisor yet or scheduled classes … but he has priority registration with his honors status. If it looks as though the M.S. is not doable within that four year time frame, he would do an honors thesis instead. Of course, assuming excellent grades and LSAT scores, is this a reasonable plan of attack for reaching his goal – law school.

Sure, assuming that this is the course of study he is interested in pursuing. It really does not matter too much what he majors in as an undergraduate, as long as he does well. It would also help if he took courses that help to improve his writing, and critical reading and logical reaading skills.

Zebes, is your son in the Honors Program at UGA? If he is, he made a wonderful decision! I’m at UGA and in the Honors Program as well I hear the accelerated course (B.A/M.A) program in the Terry College of Business is excellent. Isn’t it great how much credit you can receive from AP? If your son achieves receiving around 30 hours, he will have probably all those pesky core classes out of the way. That’s wonderful! I’m sure you’re very proud! Best of luck to your son when he comes to UGA in the Fall!

The master degree won’t matter that much except for certain practice areas where degrees in economics are sought - certain antitrust practices love to get those with degrees in economics. I think there are a couple of joint JD/MA programs in economics.

Green7, no he’s not at UGA. He applied there OOS, and didn’t get in. I believe someone asked for his stats once before, and I posted them in the UGA forum. He’s going to UCF, and he’s aware that he’s coming from a lower tier school so he’s trying to tackle things he likes, i.e. Economics/English … and do a thesis, whether M.S. or honors. Obviously aware that he needs an excellent LSAT and grades, he’s trying to maximize a route that will benefit him towards preparing for the LSAT and doing well in law school.

I’m sorry, I jumped to a quick conclusion when I glanced at your other posts. The AP credit remark still applies though, he’s going to have lots out of the way so he can take the classes he’ll really enjoy. Congratulations to him for getting into Honors at UCF as well! It sounds like your son is choosing the same route I’m on, and I’m sure with a solid GPA and LSAT score, he can go to whatever law school he chooses. From asking many of my peers, it seems as if it’s of little importance what undergraduate institution a student attends in law school admissions, rather, what opportunities the student seizes and their accomplishments at their respective university. Good luck to your son in all his endeavors!
