Would a 1940 SAT get me into NYU?

Would a 1940 SAT get me into NYU? I am an African American and I also go to a private catholic high school and am the captain of my indoor and outdoor track team

Depends on the school - Which one are you applying to?

Good chance, except for Stern.

A 1940 is too low for NYU whether you are applying to Stern or CAS.

People underestimate the difficulty of applying to NYU CAS. The reason NYU’s SAT Average is about 2020 is because of the other schools like Tisch and Steinhardt which take students based on musical / artistic talent and auditions rather than good stats bring down the average.

NYU CAS, however is almost as hard to get into as Stern. For NYU CAS I would say you need about 2100 or 2150 minimum to have a shot.

1940 can definitely get you into CAS. Although the average might be marginally higher, that is still sufficient as long as the other parts of your ap are really good. For stern, that is not good enough.

@SternBusiness a 1940 will not get him into NYU CAS without any serious hooks to his application.

I’d put Verbal + Math average for CAS of to be about a 1400. If you get your scores up to above a 2000 that should help significantly

@qwertyzxc a 1940 is in the vicinity of the average for CAS. The mean avg SAT at Stern is a 1430, and stern is much more selective. Also, being African American with a close to avg SAT score means you have a really good shot.

My Math and Reading is a 1250 Combined. I got a 690 in writing which really helped me. I don’t know if that will affect anything though

@SternBusiness I agree being URM will help but a 1940 is not in the vicinity of the average. NYU Average SAT is about a 2020. 1940 is much closer to the 25th percentile. Keep in mind that this 2020 average includes Tisch, Steinhardt, and Liberal Studies which are all large programs at NYU with much lower averages. Because if someone is incredibly talented but only has a 1750 SAT, Tisch will still take them because of their talent. There are plenty of students that fit that profile.

Therefore, schools like CAS, Gallatin, and Stern have much higher averages to compensate. Yes, I agree Stern is selective but CAS and Gallatin are not that far behind in terms of average stats. I would put average CAS score at least a 2100. I think you are deeply underestimating the selectivity of CAS.

@qwertyzxc I think you are overestimating and maybe I am underestimating haha However, with regards to tisch what you said is true, but they actually still have an average about the same as CAS or even slightly higher. Tisch is extrememly selective and half of their profile for getting in is academics. Whatever though. I admit a 1940 might be slightly low since the average is around a 2000 like you said, but still its not a dealbraker

I would say that most music/ art students in Tisch or Steinhardt need SAT’s that are closer to 1800 to 1950 minimally. You are not understanding the importance of academics in both the music and art programs. Music D at Steinhardt had a 2130 SAT. Art student D has a 2000 SAT–but 720 in Verbal. Most students have the academics plus talent!!

As for the OP a 1950 for CAS is low, but URM could help. Good luck!

Well, guys, to figure the average SAT, couldn’t you take the average CR+M (1450) for Stern, and multiply by 1.5? This would bring it up to about 2150. CAS probably isn’t far behind, maybe around 2050 or so? As an URM, a 1940 won’t tank his chances, and probably puts him at 40th percentile or so.

Try for LSP.
