Would a (full-ride) scholarship help my chances?

I didn’t know whether I should put this in admissions, chances, or here - so I put it here.

I am to be interviewed for the Evans Scholarship in less than a week, and I will know within a week of the interview if I received it or not. For those who unfamiliar with the Evans Scholarship, it is a full-ride scholarship to any of the participating schools (most in the Mid West but they prefer in state schools: i.e. Michigan for me) and includes housing at the Evans House; it is through the Western Golf Association for caddies at qualifying golf courses. There is a very good chance that I will receive the scholarship. I have a couple questions concerning this. Will Michigan be aware of me receiving a full-ride scholarship? If so, will it help/hinder my chances of admittance? I only ask this because of the alarming amount of deferrals I have seen recently. Just for some quick credentials (if you’d care to give a quick chance as well  ):

Thank You

Yes! It will definitely help. If you get the scholarship, I would contact the university right away. Write a letter to the admissions office stating that Michigan is your top-choice school and that you have earned a full-ride scholarship that can be used at the university. Also mention that you will enroll if accepted. It’s not binding, but will certainly help. Best of luck to you!

I’m going to bump this because I just received confirmation of my Evans Scholarship!

Yes! I absolutely agree with Miw140, contact the admissions office, find the rep for your high school and talk to them. it would be worth making an appointment if possible and going to AA in person. Get your parents to help if you need help connecting with UofM. I’m familiar with that scholarship - Congratulations!!

Congrats!

Well done! Definitely contact the admissions officer at Michigan who is responsible for your school. You counselor should know her/his name and contact details. If you can provide evidence of your scholarship to the admissions officer, even better. Congratulations!

Congrats on your full-ride, and best of luck in your admission

Thanks guys! I’m going to send admissions an email in a bit.

Congratulations — scant42 – on your full-ride scholarship. I have a question not specifically addressed to you but to anymore more knowledgeable of the UMich admission system. It is clear that scant42 has the necessary academic qualification for acceptance to UMich. My question – why would the admissions office even care if someone has a full-ride to attend — UMich is going to get their tuition, fees, etc from the incoming student anyways

My High School’s counselor voiced the same concern. I don’t really know and I could see it going either way, but regardless it is information that has the potential to up your chances so it couldn’t hurt to share it with your admission officer.

As an instate student, if you don’t get accepted with those qualifications then there is something terribly amiss with admissions!

The reason why scholarship recipients are given a serious looksy is simple really.

  1. CoA is no longer a concern, so it will not play a factor in their college decision to attend Michigan
  2. The scholarship has its own selective vetting system, which pretty much screened the student on behalf of the university.
