Would a Racing "Hook" help my chances?

Ok so here is my conundrum:

I dont exactly have something that admissions committees will use to identify me as unique (e.g. “oh thats the cricket player”/“that guy plays bassoon”).

However, I’m an SCCA (sports car club of america) member and i race in some of their events. In a competitive adult karting league (as in, all 30+ except me), i finished 3rd overall out of 15 guys after 8 weeks of racing. I’m less than 0.5 seconds off the track record at my home track.

Do you think colleges would see this as something really cool that they would want to associate with? Or would it raise concern that perhaps i was a reckless individual, obsessed with speed?

I have some other interesting and solid extracurriculars, but nothing dramatically new that colleges dont see frequently. So good idea or not?

That’s a pretty outstanding thing…it can only help you. I don’t know what colleges you will be applying to but usually the huge, state schools (such as UC, SUNY) tend to focus on SAT and such, while LAC and top privates place equal emphasis on EC and grades. Either way racing is not a really common EC so it should be a plus.

I was thinking about applying to some very good LACs and hell maybe even a few ivies. I just thought this would be a good way to stand out, maybe?

If you play up an intererst in Formula SAE, and the schools to which you are applying have teams, then yes, it could be a major hook.

well formula SAE would be really interesting, but im not sure if im mechanically talented enough to build my own car. Do they just need drivers? Because if so, id be great for them. But my technical expertise ends pretty much at the local tech challenge…

Of course teams need talented drivers. And even if you are not mechanically inclined, there is plenty of “leg work” needed to support a team! Besides, indviduals don’t “build there own cars” anyway. It’s a team effort under the supervision of one or more profs.
