Would a wealthy guy from southern california fit in here?

my guy friend is gonna go here but i am kinda worried for him… i hear its like 90% texans at u of t at austin and i’m just wondering will it be a culture shock for him? will he make friends?

Of course he will, it’s UT!!
There’s people from all over the place here.

He will be fine.

texas in the media ≠ UT students

foxshox- what’s that supposed to mean?

and my friend said he is excited for all “the hot texas babes.”

true or not?

Well the media portrays people from Texas as a bunch of rednecks, secessionist, etc etc. and UT is the complete polar opposite of these people. Yeah, and there are definitely hot babes, but tell him to take non-engineering for maximum hot chicks.

As for the girls, lol playboy rated UT Austin as the campus with the best looking girls. Its from “the u”, that segment mtv does.

The undergrads are over 90% Texan but the atmosphere on campus is really friendly. Out-of-staters are welcomed. He will love UT.

He’s rich? Tell him to order VIP ACL tickets! This fall’s lineup is great.

I would think a rich guy would do well just about anywhere. LOL

Texas is a pretty wealthy state, and a very diverse state. People move to Texas from all over (we get a ton from the northeast). Austin itself is one of the nicer cities in the US.

Any state flagship university is going to have a large number of wealthy students. This is certainly going to be the case for the flagship university of the 2nd most populated state (with 3 of the 10 largest cities in the US). If he wants to live in high end accomodations with other wealthy people/students then he will certainly have that opportunity. I’d recommend that he broadens his horizons some though.

This guy is going to love UT, it won’t be a culture shock at all.

As long as he doesn’t act blatantly anti-Texan, he will be fine.

Do remember though that Texans are very tribal and don’t take kindly to criticism of Texas.

But it’s an awesome school–great weather, great sports, great academics, and good looking women as well.

Texas is a very diverse state–you have kids wearing wranglers and boots in the same classes as kids with nose rings and death metal t-shirts next to the kid with the pocket protector. And the surfer brah too I guess.

He’ll be fine.

It depends- is he stuck-up or down to earth?

Plenty of friends at UT for stuck-up people (they can stick together) or for down to earth people.

as long as he doesn’t introduce himself as a “weathly guy from socal”

that would just make him sound like a stuck up loser. having money does not always = cool points. most of the most outgoing, entertaining people I have met are definitely not extremely wealthy.

If he’s extremely liberal…tell him not to flaunt it, assuming he will want to rush at the top frats, which are full of rich white conservatives from Dallas or Houston

there’s a staggering amount of students from wealthy families at UT. If he’s looking to socialize with “rich” people, he’ll find no shortage of 'em here. Really, though, this campus is so diverse that there’s a scene for everyone.

What, you mean he won’t have a nametag? After 16+ posts about him? People will want to know who he is!
