I’m currently a sophomore. I’m taking this elective called “Communication Systems”. It’s just a waste of time really. My main concern is that my teacher, the way she grades is just pathetic. She’s extremely lazy first off. Doesn’t like answering questions. Tells us to think really “hard” before we ask any questions. If you were to see her in person, you could tell just through her attitude and tone that she doesn’t like teaching us.

Well I currently have an F in her class. I’m gonna try and bring it up as much as I can but it’s pretty difficult when she’s too lazy to help us with anything, too lazy to grade stuff and the way she takes off points is by standing there marking you off if she sees you talking/rolling around in chairs. Obviously, it’s flawed. You’re not gonna catch EVERY single person in the class talking. There will be students who won’t get caught, or students who get misunderstood and she marks them down. She won’t even yell at you and be like “STOP TALKING or you’re gonna get points taken off.” I just see her look at kids and write stuff down.

Would getting a bad grade in her class one quarter really affect my GPA and chances of getting into a good college. It just makes me cringe to think that such a DUMB teacher is deciding our grades. Really frustrates me. Would getting a C or something in another core class one quarter (math, ap world etc.) affect your GPA with college too? Do colleges just not look at your electives or PE and calculate core classes? Do they even see your quarterly grades?

Are you absolutely sure the teacher is the lazy one?

Sometimes in school and in college too, you just have to suck it up. You have a teacher who doesn’t appeal to you and you have to figure out how to work with it. You figure out what they want, do what you have to do to get through the class and then you never take that person’s class again.

In this case, it sounds pretty easy to see what she wants. Don’t talk in class and scoot your chair around. Don’t ask obvious or lazy questions. Getting an F means you aren’t even doing some basic minimal level work. You can’t put that all on the teacher. Or you can but it is you getting hurt for not getting real.

If it is an elective and you are getting nothing out of it you should see if you can still drop it. I don’t know how your school handles quarters on the transcript, maybe you should find out. Schools on quarter systems will report it, schools on semester systems usually won’t. If they see an F it is not looking good for you. Either is a D. Colleges often just take your gpa the way your school calculates it. But usually they will not be interested in your PE grade. Electives will almost always count. Low grades in core classes are even worse, but you should be able to survive a C. It depends on what you mean by good college. There are hundreds of them. Check what grades are typical for the colleges you are shooting for.

I’m gonna try to bring it up to a C for this quarter at least. It’s not gonna be easy though. Like I said, you aren’t there for it but you’ll have to take my word. I’m not the only one in her class doing this bad, and definitely not the only one in all of her classes. I’ve heard from several other students who have her for Art, or other electives that tell me the same things.

Anyways, what I’m getting from you is that one poor grade in a quarter could really affect your college application? Sounds pretty scary. I’m going to be speaking with my counselor or possibly administration about my communications teacher.

If you do speak to the administration, pull your thoughts together. Don’t call her lazy, no one will take you seriously. Instead, say the way she asks people to think really hard before asking questions intimidates students from asking anything. That sort of thing. If you think her grading is harsh, ask them to review her history of grading to see if it is an anomaly from other teachers. Don’t ask them to share that info with you.

I’m not really sure anyone is going to take much stock in the opinion of a student who is failing the class. I’d ask a trusted teacher what they think you should do. Sure there are bad teachers I will have to take your word for it. Get what you need to do to pass the class done first, then worry about making complaints. If you really want to take this up, keep a record of actual grievances and leave out the petty stuff.

I think you are too hung up by who she is ‘catching’ talking in class or who is getting what grade in art. You aren’t supposed to talk, isn’t that simple? This has nothing to do with your turning in your work and passing your tests.

You are taking my words a bit out of context. I’m just saying that a F or D is going to affect your gpa and look bad on your transcripts. I don’t know if your quarter grades are marked.

I’m not gonna use words like “lazy” or just go to administration by myself. From what I understand, I’m not the only student who has a problem with her. Even if I go to administration, counselor, etc. I still have doubts they’ll take me seriously EVEN if there are several other students with similar complaints. I’m trying my best to get a good grade in this class, but the teacher is making it extremely difficult. Did I mention there was a PRE ASSESSMENT given on the 1st week of school that was put in as a test GRADE? When I asked her about why this is graded in the first place, she told me in a very apathetic tone “Yes it’s graded. That’s why you’re supposed to work hard to bring your grade up.” Turning in work is 100% NOT AN ISSUE for me. The issue from what i understand is that she looks at work through GOOGLE APPS. She wanted us to share with her a folder, containing different folders with different assignments in them. A majority of the class did all the work and shared it with her. Not difficult. The problem is, she never told us whether or not she received it until recently, when we started seeing 0’s in the grade book. For some of the assignments assigned (while she was not present for 4 straight class periods) she never even told us to share it with her. Anyways, she finally just clarified the whole thing today to the class but said she’s taking off points for putting our assignments in the wrong folder. Let me clarify all these assignments were done in the first place, they were apparently in the wrong folder but STILL shared with her.

However, I can see where you’re coming from. You’re not physically there to see what her tone/attitude is like in class and it’s difficult to try and show that on a forum. Moving along.

The only other class I’m struggling with is AP world history. I have a C in that class currently and I’m certain I’ll have a C or above at the end of the quarter.

I apologize if I misunderstood what you were trying to say. Again, I’ll try my best to do better next quarter. I’ll try to bring those grades up as much as I can for this quarter. I’m sure I can get a C in communications systems. Now, if I do get two C’s or a C, is that still pretty awful? Just for one quarter? It won’t affect my GPA as much as a D or an F obviously but how do colleges see… C’s… as in average? I also heard (don’t know if this is true) that a C in an AP course is weighted up to a B while a B-B+ is weighted to an A.

At first I thought it was meant as a “funny” post (the description of the “lazy” teacher was hilarious, it sounded like one of those teenage novels with an obviously unreliable narrator who doesn’t realize they’re hilarious but is clearly written to be). But in the end, the student seems to be serious.

And indeed, we’re not there to see what the teacher is like. But 1st day pre assessements that count are not rare (in many schools you turn in your summer work and get a grade for it, or have a test on your summer reading), and yes talking is not allowed so whoever gets caught gets a low participation grade, rolling your chair like you’re in kindergarten and can’t sit still will get you demerit points, “thinking very hard” is necessary so that you don’t waste everyone’s time, and the teacher is not supposed to yell at you to get you to do what you’re supposed to do, you should by now know what “being a student” means and know that you automatically lose points if you don’t do it.
Perhaps this teacher comes from a more rigorous school district than you’re used to. None of the things you describe are unfair or extraordinary. So we’re obviously missing something.
Don’t fight a losing battle though:
Either drop the class and take another one, or make sure to bring your grade up to a C this quarter then up to a B next quarter.
Any F or D on the transcript raises red flags if you plan to attend a selective university.

If your school weighs AP with +1, then yes if you get a C in an AP class, it’s counted as a B for your weighted average. However it’s still a C for the unweighted average. Colleges may use the weighted or unweighted average, or make their own “mix”, as the public universities in Florida and California do.

Well I don’t know what better word to describe her than just flat out “lazy”. Apathetic? Unconcerned? Lethargic? Careless? I don’t know. My bad lol. In my mind, that’s just how me and all the other students picture her.

So correct me if I’m wrong, but a C isn’t that bad on a report card then? I know AP is weighted and that some colleges will use unweighted or weighted but what about electives? Does a C in that look worse.

If a C isn’t that bad and hopefully won’t ruin my whole future then I guess it’s a good wake up call to stop slacking in AP world. Study harder and do better work. I still disagree with you guys on the electives teacher though lol. If only we could have some sort of undercover boss or something…
