Would being a Navy Seabee help on my app?

Hello, I’ve lurked around on this board for a while before, and I’ve come to ask another question.

As of right now, paying for college is questionable. I won’t really be able to go anywhere except Middle Tennessee State because I don’t think I’ll have the money to live on campus. Architecture is really interesting to me and I’d like to do it, but MTSU doesn’t have an Architecture program and I don’t think I could get into one if I had the money. I have a 3.3 GPA with all honors classes and a hand full of APs.

I’ve been looking into ways to pay for college and the Navy is looking more and more intriguing the more I research it. The job (er, rate, as they call it in the Navy) I’m looking at most is Engineering Aid, a part of the Construction Battalion, or the Seabees. Here’s a link to details on the job and what it entails.

[Engineering Aid (EA)](http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjob1/a/ea.htm)

As you can see, I would be making architectural drawings, doing some of the engineering aspect of building things, yet you still get your hands dirty. Some pretty hands on work. The best part is that college becomes a lot cheaper. The GI Bill can give me almost $1500 per month for 36 months. That, plus some saving while in the Navy, I can go to college for very little. I’m really interested in joining the military in some form and this could go a long way to helping me get a job in the future.

My question to you is, in your opinion, does this improve my hypothetical application? If so, by how much? My main worry is that I’m not as good of an artist as other Architecture students. I don’t think I could just go up to a piece of paper and draw what I want, and make it look good. This could help me improve on that. I’d probably go to the University of Tennessee, if that makes any difference.

Thanks for your time and responses.

I cant answer your question but i remember seeing on a lot apps a list of career goals that included Naval Architect. You might look into that.

Drawing isnt a must, but being creative and artistic does help your app a lot.

Ode,

Thank you for wanting to serve. Can you look at ROTC programs? Also the Naval Academy has a Naval Architecture program as a major.
