Would Bill 175/52 Help or Hurt Me?

Would repealing the top 10% rule help or hurt my admission chances?

I am a junior from Houston and I am very interested in UT but I’m afraid it is a little out of my league…

GPA- 3.83 WEIGHTED(low rigor; only one or 2 APs per year) currently ranked 149 out of 613(hopefully on the rise, I will take 3 APs senior year)

SAT- expecting 2150+ for june

EC’s- pretty weak: 4 year basketball(2 year letter), 4 year cross country(2 year letter) at a 5A school with 2600+ students, National Merit Qualifier(waiting to see if it is commended scholar or semifinalist, probably just commended) NHS, and hopefully creating a new club at school… sadly i think thats it

Should I want Bill 175 to pass?

your class rank is 149/613 which is about 24%. That’s not gonna get you into UT. You better hope this bill passes.

so the bill will help?

What class rank would you recommend? I can probably raise it to around 90-100/613

Repeal would help you, but it ddn’t happen this session.

Your stats are good, though the rank is realatively weak. Aim for the best grades possible and what happens happens.

“What class rank would you recommend? I can probably raise it to around 90-100/613”

Top 10% means exactly that. 10%. Not 24-25% where you are now. Throw in the fact that 20+ of your classmates will probably drop out before graduation, you’re looking at dropping out of the top quarter. Raising it to 90 won’t work because 10% is #61. Not that any of this matters since as the bill currently stands there won’t be any changes until fall 2011. However, your SAT should get you in.
