Safety isn’t the main reason I want to transfer, but it is part of the equation. I go to school in an urban setting, and the police force is really weak. I know several people who have been mugged/attacked and I’ve been in several close calls myself. It’s not like I’m constantly in danger, but I do start feeling uneasy if I have to walk home by myself and if I need to stay out past sunset and little things like those.

I don’t know if I should include this in my transfer essay because it might seem trivial or come off as me complaining and being a whiner. Thoughts?

If you are transferring from an obviously high crime to a much safer campus, then I don’t see why you shouldn’t include this among your other reasons for transferring. It’s no less important than many of the reasons often cited: different student vibe, different part of the country, etc.
