I have a year gap between 11th grade and 12th. My father pulled me out from the school when I finally came out to them with my sexual identity. He made me go to work with him most of the days as he thought there was a lack of male model in my life. After a year full of ups and downs he finally understood there is nothing to be ‘fixed’ and agreed to send me back to school. I live in a small city in Turkey and I’m first in generation to go to college. I just wanted to ask if this a year of gap between grades -which I had no control over- could affect my application to any university in US -especially Ivies- negatively in any way. Thank you.
That shouldn’t affect your chances as long as you’re a good student in general. Your standardized test scores, GPA, classes, and extra curriculars would matter more.
You can describe the reason for the gap year in the additional comments section or you can write your essay about it. In addition you can ask your guidance counselor to mention it in his/her recommendation if you like.
And a bit of unsolicited advice, the acceptance rate for Ivy schools is under 10% so you need to cast a wide net when applying to colleges.
I think that would make a damn good story.
