Would Hiking the Appalachian Trail look good on my college application?

I plan on transferring from community college with atleast a 3.0 and major in aerospace engineering. Next spring after spring semester I plan on hiking 2,170 miles from maine to georgia on the AT. Will this look goood in an essay letter to the school or under extra curriculars? Also, Im Russian.

The question is good compared to what?

Enjoy the experience. I’m sure it will make for a great essay.

Sure it will, if you can write an interesting essay about how it affected you.

Just don’t go on June 21st…

say compaired to earning a private pilot certificate? Because I will do both in time, however, I feel like this is my only real chance to take 6 months and justget away from it all.

I hope it will! I wrote about hiking the Grand Canyon in my essay

how long did that take you to hike the grand canyon?

If you were an outstanding musician, debater, or entrepreneur, I could see how those accomplishments might provide a campus asset and add value to the school’s student body. I’m not sure what value-added would be provided by hiking the AT, unless you wrote that you were interested in starting or providing leadership to an Outing Club.

@FromRussia90: my mom and I hiked south rim -> north rim in 8 hours in July. So it was definitely challenging!

okay?> dude do you understand the scale of my hike vs yours?

really man? your going on a beautiful hike and you are really thinking about how its going to help you on college applications? you have to be kidding me.

@FromRussia90 (again):

Yes.

I hiked the GC a long time ago though, before thinking about college apps.

And I wrote about the hike as a metaphor (upside-down bell curve), equating its progression to other events from my life and some of my personal characteristics.

I don’t think you should hike the Appalachian trail just because it might look good on your college apps. If you actually want to do it for the experience, you should. And you might end of reflecting over it on your apps later…

You should hike the Appalachian Trail because you want to, not because it’ll look good on your college application. Honestly…

^thank you.

Ofcourse I want too… I even want to hike the PCT and Continental divide… then the himilayas. im using the AT as a first long hike experience. Ive always loved shows like suvivorman and man vs wild… and i just want to be in the wild… but if its better to do it NOW before i transfer from community college that way it WILL look good on my college app… rather than after college and not evening reaping a benefit… and the way i see it it will motivate me even more to thru hike the trail next march.

Hike the trail, carry Walden with you, also carry some Emmerson and Whtman and a journal. Write an essay about this.

Or, carry Muir, and hike the trail, write about the history of national parks in America, and what this hike is like.

This is a really rough hike, harder than you might think, and you will need to plan food drops and whatnot.

You should not do this “for” an essay or EC, for that you might consider NOLS.

what walden? muir? whtman? emmerson?

There are, historically, a lot of reasons a hike on the appalachian trail is intellectually significant in America, and these writers can help you to “see” why, also ways to talk about it.
