Would how my school presents my GPA matter?

My GPA is 4.09, but I am in the 4th decile of my class 200. Would it make a difference if when my transcripts were sent that my GPA and decile were given versus if it was simply my GPA compared to the valedictorian (which I believe they may be doing)? His GPA is around a 5.1

And if this newly adapted system of comparison is being used, how good would a 4.09 compared to 5.1 look to colleges?

If you are at a public high school and are applying to an in-state public university, they probably have an arrangement to present the academic record in a way that the university wants.

Otherwise, each university is different in how it handles academic records from different high schools.

The grade info might not just be on your transcript. Your high school will also send a profile of the school. The profile will explain grading policy, how/if grades are weighted, and so forth. Some profiles give the range of GPAs for the year’s senior class. Others give a GPA breakdown of each decile. And some profiles don’t list anything about the GPAs of the senior class.

You’ll have to ask to see your own high school’s profile to see what information is listed.
