My dad works for the University of Rochester, so if i got accepted my tuition would only be as much as tuition for a SUNY school. I know that the U of R is a good school and that I would save a lot of money by going there, but I really fell in love with another selective LAC. I kind of wanted to apply ED to the LAC, but then I might miss out on way cheaper tuition at the U of R. Btw I do like the U of R, just not as much. What should I do?

Talk to your parents. Can they afford the LAC? They may tell you that they want you to attend the school you really want, so not to worry. Or they may say that you can only attend if the cost at the LAC is the same as what Rochester would cost you. But they’re going to be the ones to help you make this decision.

Personally, I would apply RD to the LAC and see what they offer you financially.

Can you get any kind of tuition reciprocity or rate reduction at the LAC based on your father working at U of R?

Why do you feel the need to apply ED to the LAC? Apply RD so that you can keep your options open while taking time to make a decision.

Sometimes we have to make decisions based on what we can afford, rather than on what we like better (which is why I drive a Hyundai). In the long run, U of R may be the better choice since it might well leave you with lesser debt.

Many, many students have had to settle for their second choice, and many of them end up glad they did after meeting great friends and enjoying classes and activities.

My dad is really pushing me to go to the U of R and I don’t think so Erin’s Dad.
I wanted to apply ED to increase my chances of getting accepted since it is pretty selective. I’m probably gonna do RD now though. Thanks for the help!

U of R is a great school. My daughter was very interested and was accepted, but didn’t choose it due to price and how far away it was. You don’t have to worry about either of those! I recommend applying RD to your LAC and then seeing what kind of financial package you receive from them. If there is a huge difference in total cost, I’d stick with U of R, unless the other school has many more opportunities that would justify the higher cost. When you choose a school you need to weigh cost against opportunity. Just from what you said so far, it sounds like you could win on both sides at U of R.

Don’t apply ED, apply RD.

I agree with all of you. I definitely think RD is the way to go now. thanks!

Good move. I’m pretty surprised that your dad is allowing you to consider it at all. But it’s his money, unless you are going to take out loans that you will repay for the difference? How would that feel?
