Hi i am a senior in high school i have a 2.8 GPA and my act score is a 13 i want to go to school for communications and i don’t want to go instate i want to go to florida is there any place i will get accepted.
Work on increasing your ACT score. 13 is very low
As you’re aware, your GPA and ACT limit you. Your ACT is the 4th percentile – meaning 96% of test takers scored better than you on this one measurement. But all isn’t lost for sure. The replies given to your previous post have lots of good pointers. Community college is the best place for 3 reasons:
- it’ll ease you into what college-level work really is like. Do you want to go spend $1000s and still have a 2.8 GPA? Of course not. Once in college, you want to be able to hit the ground running.
- It’s much more inexpensive. You may not escape your home state-- but again the risk here isn’t great. There’s another poster right now who, 6 weeks in, is failing all his classes. Simply overwhelmed. Now will need to completely withdraw and lose $1000s in tuition and fees. Costly mistake.
- If you perform well community college, when you apply to 4 year schools, you’ll have a better selection since they won’t be risking admitting a marginal HS applicant with a 2.8GPA and a 13 ACT – they’ll be looking at a more mature student with some decent accomplishments under her belt.
Best of luck to you!

How much will your parents pay? Someone has to pay for what you want to do.
Going OOS is very costly.
Also see how much potential schools will cost you. All schools are required to have a Net Price Calculator on their web site so students can get a forecast of costs. If you are not in-state for FL then you will pay out of state rates. You as a student are limited to $5500 in loans as a freshman. Your parents would need to pay for the rest. You’ll need to discuss that with them.
You can’t go to college with a 13 ACT, so I’m assuming you’re registered to retake the test. Are you working hard on ACT prep right now (that means Question of the day, done daily + work from book Up your score ACT + ACT Red book practice tests every weekend + Meltzer’s ACT English)? Do you have a date when you’re retaking and have you set a plan diving your work into topics, per week + times set aside to take the practice tests on weekends, etc?
Another issue, if you go out of state, is costs.
What’s your parents’ budget?
If you don’t know, talk to them today.
Right now, your best bet is community college.
There are community colleges in Florida (Miami Dade is one of the largest in the country) but it’ll be quite expensive and you need to bring your ACT up in order to have a shot at success once there.
Why do you want to go to Florida, do you have family there?
Have you tried the SAT Test? Your ACT score suggests some serious deficiencies which would put any reputable 4-year institution out of reach. Community College (CC) is your best bet, but your ACT scores also indicate that you will be placed in remedial classes for reading/writing and math. This will add at least 1.5 or 2 years at the CC. Many CC students have gone this route and eventually enroll in “good” 4-year programs and graduate.
You should resist the urge to enroll in any of the For-Profit Colleges that target students with your profile. There are some expensive low tier 4-year Non-Profit colleges out there that will also grant you access, which will most likely lead to deleterious results (high student loan debt, be academically dismissed after a few years or granting you a degree that no employer will accept).
Tennessee State University-- 2.5 GPA OR 19 ACT…as long as your English/reading/math subscores are each 13 (or higher.)
