Would I have a shot if I applied?

Possible Hook: Volunteering in Rwanda over summer for 10 days. Teaching English and computers to children.

Awards and Scholarships:
uhh…
I won two silver medals in the National Latin Exam and some German award, but that’s about it.

Hopefully I’ll get some next year

I’m not asking for chances, I just want to know if I would be a competitive applicant. Because from what I understand, chances are pretty much the same except for particularly outstanding students.

Oh yeah, I’m upper-middle class, white, and from Long Island.

if you write your essay about rwanda & how it was wonderful, influencial, etc, then yes.

if rwanda was something you despised… find a hook quick! or… yeah :)

i’m not so sure I agree with the above poster. Write about something that you enjoy doing, something that REALLY was influential, incredible and amazing. DON’T write about an experience for the sake of magnifying it as a hook. Your test score is not that great for Stanford, especially if you’re not hooked, so retake and try to get 2200+.

GPA is good, test scores are so-so. ECs are pretty standard excepting the Rwanda thing. Admissions officers have spoken about becomeing more wary about “fake” ECs, where someone is shipped off to another country for a program like what you describe, just so they can put it on a college application. If you want this to matter, make sure that they know you are genuine.

umm, how would “church youth group” be an ec? like im all for it, im really involved in my youth group also, but does going to church really qualify as an EC?

i have the same question as the above poster.

While nothing particularly stands out (and I’m sure how much 10 days in Africa really means), you definitely have a chance and should apply SCEA if possible.

You should consider taking the SAT over to raise the CR to the level of your other scores; it kind of stands out, especially considering your seeming tendency toward the humanities.

Youth group activities are certainly an EC, much like clubs. Leadership in youth group matters would help much, though.

I asked this question last year…with a 670,670, 620, and no huge awards. everyone told me it was suicide…but i still got in. it’s good to ask opinions, but don’t let people tell you that you don’t have what it takes. write good essays and get good recs. be yourself. if you’re truly interested in the school and learning…the’ll see that.

Also…early action may or may not be a good idea. It’s true you have a better chance statistically because less people apply early. But stanford has a policy of rejecting the majority of early applicants instead of deferring them like other schools. Good luck :-)

Luckygirl, thanks for giving us hope! Did you apply SCEA?
