Would I qualify for a scholarship appeal?

My GPA fell a little short of what I needed to renew my scholarship for the year. However, there was a chance of appeal if you suffered an illness or something of that sort during the school year. I actually had a terrible ear infection in October that lasted about a week or so. and I had trouble hearing the professors, so I moved up but it didn’t seem to help. I figured it might have been a temporary result from my sickness but it wasn’t going away. I went to the audiologist a few months later and test results came back saying that i had permanent mild-moderate hearing loss. I applied for my school’s disability office and got accepted. I sent my appeal letter describing this in detail along with the disability office documents, hearing test results, and a letter from my audiologist. Would this reasoning qualify to get my scholarship renewed for the year?

To better address your questions, please answer:

1) When you say “scholarship”, what exactly are you referring to? What is/are the source(s), and is it/they based on financial need?

2) Exactly when did you self-identify yourself as a student with a documented disability? Was it after, or during, your last semester? Will you be receiving academic accomodations as as result of your disability?

Scholarship refers to my award from high school scores. It was awarded and renewable for four years, as long as you met the requirements. I lost it for this upcoming year, however if I raise my GPA, I will be able to renew it for the following years.

I identified myself as a disabled student just this summer, so after the semester. I will be receiving academic accommodations from here on throughout the rest of my college career as an undergraduate.

I understand that you’re anxious, but no one here can possibly offer a useful opinion about how your appeal will be decided. Your argument sounds convincing, but we don’t know what the school’s criteria are for granting appeals nor how strictly they’re applied. I know my D’s college gives just about everyone a second chance (but not a third chance) to keep a merit scholarship, but each school operates in its own way. You’ll just have to hang in there until you receive an actual decision. Good luck to you.

Honestly, none of us here can know the answer. However, I will say that reasons for appleal are commonly discussed here. Most are very, very similar tales of personal woe. Yours, however, is not the typical story. I would think that, with documentation, you have an appeal worth listening to.

Just curious…how far off were you? Agree with others…contact the school with the information about your hearing loss AND what YOU are doing to address this.

My D had .2 below GPA requirement for an outside scholarship, her first semester freshman year, they sent a letter every year for renewal and permission to release grades, and if below the requirement, there were 3 lines to “explain why” it was below.

She wrote a 2 page letter instead of just 3 lines. It was granted no questions asked. Her reasons were alot less significant than yours.

Good luck, and all you can do is appeal and hope for the best.
