I am really interested in Japanese but don’t know if I should sign up for this 6 credit course in the first semester of my high school. I want to keep a high GPA and this class meets everyday! If I were to get a B in it, it would really harm my GPA…

If you’re really interested in learning the language, then I think you will be fine since you have the motivation. With the plethora of information online, even if you struggle a bit in the class, there are tons Japanese learning websites and forums. If it becomes too difficult, just drop it.

My Japanese teacher did bring up one good point about taking the class though. It does make you stand out from other students taking more commonly studied languages such as Spanish, French, etc.

I studied it for four years in high school (just took AP exam) and am entering UMD as a Japanese major. If you have any other questions about studying Japanese, feel free to PM me.

Lol I meant to say “First semester of college…”

Thanks for the tips though!

My guess is it would be really hard to get an A in that class unless you took Japanese in high school.

That is a very general statement. Romance languages are probably much more difficult. As someone who has taken both Japanese and Chinese classes, I can say that many students in my classes (like me) overestimated the difficulty of learning a new writing system.

My S had taken Spanish in HS but signed up for Japanese his first year at college. He made an A both semesters and found it not very difficult although he had gone online the year before and started learning J as he was very interested in the language. I don’t know the site he used but he said he basically knew most of what was taught first semester. I’m sure there are several sites to choose so maybe just start over the summer and pick up what you can.
