Would it be ridiculous to buy an E-reader?

I’ve purchased ipads for 2 of my kids. I have an iphone. I really just want to be able to read books in bed. Would it be silly to buy a device that is only an E-reader and not a full fledged tablet?

Absolutely not ridiculous!! I totally love my e-Reader (Kindle Paperwhite) for exactly the reason you said. It doesn’t have the same type of screen as an iPad or tablet, and so the eye strain is very minimal and the lighting won’t interfere with your sleep.

I use it all the time right before bed, and it is very comfortable to read in the dark so I don’t disturb my husband. It is a totally worthwhile investment for an avid reader! I read about 50 books a year, and there’s no way I could do it without a dedicated e-reader. I have a tablet too, and I like it, but not for reading.

I am a lover of books, real books, so I haven’t crossed over to the “dark side” just yet. But in trying to read electronically in bed, I discovered the weight of the reader/tablet mattered. I wouldn’t have thought of that without actually lying in bed with it. So consider that when making a purchase.

I have both a kindle paperwhite and an iPad. I much, much prefer the kindle for reading books. In fact when I travel for work I always carry both. The kindle is lighter and smaller so much more convenient when reading for long periods, the battery lasts a lot longer, and it’s a lot less fatiguing on the eyes. When I’m eating solo at restaurants (a sad consequence of business travel) you can usually find me at the bar with my kindle. It’s a lot less stressful knocking around in public with a $100 kindle vs a $700 iPad.

It’s too bad you didn’t post this yesterday. Amazon had a great sale on kindles, like $30 off or thereabouts.

I have a 8.9 inch kindle fire. Using it to write this message. We bought it to use as an e reader but also use it a lot to surf the web and check email. Keep in mind if you are using it to read before going to sleep the light from the screen will keep you alert and awake. They say to shut off all electronics one hour before going to bed. Reduce the brightness of the screen at night.

I LOVE my Kindle, but I have no interest in having in iPad. My laptop is fine for me. When I’m reading, I just want my book, nothing else, but other people may feel differently.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite, but passed it off to one of the kids when I discovered that I prefer to read on my iPad mini. It’s a lot lighter than a full iPad, so close to the weight of a Kindle. And, I can read with white text on black background and turn down the screen brightness. I prefer this for nighttime reading just before bed. It makes it a lot easier for me to fall asleep. It’s better for books that have figures, because you can zoom in and see color.

Another happy Kindle Fire owner here. They are relatively inexpensive, great for books, and having the internet is a big plus.

I have a Kindle Fire and the regular small Kindle. The small Kindle is my favorite for reading. It’s so small and lightweight that I don’t get tired of holding it. I read on my Kindle every morning while eating my cereal!

I have a kindle paperwhite that is the love of my life.

A dedicated e-reader that uses e-ink really is a very different reading experience than an IPad or a Fire. The way it is lit is also totally different. I run a large online book club with lots of dedicated readers. Some people only like books, but those who use devices much prefer dedicated e-ink based readers. In addition to being easier on your eyes and much more like reading a book, they have way longer battery life and can be read in bright direct sunlight so great for beach vacations. Maybe you have a friend with a Paperwhite you could try for a night or two to see if you like it?

At any rate whichever route you go, it is worth it!!

Love my Kindle Paperwhite. I bought it for myself, so I don’t think it’s ridiculous!

If you are interested in a kindle Amazon is bound to have a deal on black Friday.

I didn’t think I’d like a Kindle.
DH gave me one as a gift.
I was wrong.

Well I may be the only one that uses an iPad- H bought it for Coursera courses, I have been using it with the free kindle app and read it on the lowest dark background setting for reading in bed. Does not bother H at all. Puts me to sleep.

I have an original Kindle e-reader as well as a Kindle fire tablet. I can’t imagine ever giving up the e-reader. For me, reading in bed, the Kindle Fire is fine. It’s when I’m outside - at the beach, working a cross-country race, sitting in the stands at a track meet - when the e-reader is invaluable. You can’t read a tablet in full sunlight. You can read an e-reader.

I think there is a promotion going on now and an extra $30 for Amazon prime members. (discount taken at register)

For a long while I was determined not to buy a kindle, because there is nothing like turning a page in a book, but the day came when my arthritis and carpal tunnel made it painful to hold a heavy book for any amount of time, and I tend to like to read for long periods LOL, I gave in and bought a kindle paper white and now I never hold a real book, it is so comfortable to hold the device in one hand and read in bed at night!

That’s how I feel @musictherapymom . . .I love reading my Kindle in bed because it is so lightweight and manageable with just one hand. It’s so nice not to have to try to hold open the pages, use a light source, etc. etc. when in bed. Love mine so much.
