Would it hurt or help to mention that my parents are doctors?

My top choice currently is Georgetown, and I want to go into medicine. For one of the essay sections, you have to write about why you want to go into a particular field. Mentioning my parents’ occupations may be unavoidable, as they are doctors and have definitely had an influence on my choice, but it is a field I genuinely want to go into. I don’t want to sounds like another privileged kid whose doctor parents pushed their own expectations on them. Should I say what their occupations are and focus on how it has exposed me to the field and showed me how rewarding it is to dedicate your career to helping others, or should I just leave that out entirely and talk only about my own experiences with medicine (working w/ surgeons and volunteering at hospitals). Thank you!

Hi GUsm14, on the Common App, it already asked for parents’ occupation so colleges will know. Therefore,i suggest you save the precious essay words talking about yourself and your passion. : )

Pre-meds with parents who are MD’s are a dime a dozen - leave it out.

Thank you! Some follow-up q’s --

Georgetown isn’t a member of the Common Application, so do they still ask for parent occupations?

And assuming they do ask for it: Since my parents’ occupations are a deterrent, should I try at all to justify why it’s a good thing by mentioning how it’s made me interested in medicine from a young age w/ a sentence or two in my essay? Or should I just not mention it at all and keep a completely personal focus?

Surely you have your own reasons for wanting to go into medicine. I’d keep the focus on you, not your parents. I don’t know if it is a deterrent or not, but since you are the one they are considering, make it your reasons. Of course your parents influenced you- probably all parents do to some extent, but you only have so much space to show the college who you are, so use it for you.

Thank you!
