I have a 4.0 Unweighted GPA and do Debate Team (Vice President), Future Business Leaders of America(President) , Class of 2011 Vice President, and JV Tennis.

However my weakness would be my testing scores. I am very weak in this area. I avg between a 2 and 3 as my score on most AP Exams and have a 1950 SAT Score…

Would I still be a contender to get admitted into Stanford?

dana772576, very much agreed. ive realized that getting into good schools comes down to luck. is the admin officer having a good or bad day? do they what me…at that time or not?

You don’t get into Stanford based on being talented only, you get in based on if there’s something they think you’d add to their campus. Most talented students will not make it. You have a chance – you have to show you’re special in some way, and hope they actually want it. Most Stanford students have higher SAT’s than what you have, but the SAT is utterly idiotic. Just go take the ACT and hope you do better, do everything you can otherwise.

But I’m mostly a “debater” and “into politics”…but then again, there are millions of “me” out there…

do you think personal experience help “set me apart” … like here’s an example from the internet…

“a kid grew up with arguing parents on the verge of divorce. he had no other choice than to get into their argument and stop them…as a way of keeping them together. he was constantly filled with rage and anger…as he was always surrounded by those traits. but as high school came, he transfered his angers into his school’s mock trial team–and became a national winner”

is that what “setting yourself apart” means?

Well rollercoaster, believe it or not, there aren’t that many people who’re interested in the same things you are, and actually do them very well. You can stand out if you shine at what you love!

That doesn’t guarantee you a spot anywhere, and it’s up to your chances, but it’s probably the best thing you can do. Further, focus on marketing what your good qualities are on your application.
