would stanford discourage engineering major plus a minor?

chemE major and geophysics minor?

stanford is pretty flexible in interdisciplinary studies, but would they see it as not focusing on one area?

stanford wouldn’t discourage you from doing that. there’s tons of engineering majors that have a minor in math, although thats generally not too difficult due to a popular math series which is allowed to be double counted toward engineering and math. I’m not familiar with the physics requirements but Stanford certainly wouldn’t mind you pursuing it at all…

My tour guide at Stanford was a double major in English and Earth Systems. And he was going on to law school. Based on that (admittedly tiny) sample, I’d say Stanford doesn’t care if you focus or not. :P

I agree with the above–that’s been my experience, as well.

Stanford encourages broad liberal arts education (as evident from their extensive distribution requirements)

Stanford encourages it if you can. All minors are limited to 6 courses for that reason.
