Hello! I’m a junior and I have a lot of ECs. And I love doing all of them. The thing is, is it a laundry list? I mean, they’re all related to the STEM field. Or I believe they are, haha.

My current ECs include:

HOSA (Health Occupations of America) (At my school, you have to pass preliminary exams and interviews to get in)
Science Bowl (J.V. captain sophomore, Varsity and VP this year)
Future Practicing Physicians Network (Webmaster; we provide volunteering, job-shadowing, and internship opportunities for students interested in the medical field)
Robotics (Founder and president)
Science Student Council
Girls Who Code Club
Autism Awareness Club (Co-founder; it’s still in-progress, but the club will be different in that it’s spreading awareness through self-advocacy; all the members are on the autism spectrum)

*A possible extracurricular I will be doing is the Stanford Brain Bee. I’ve been self-studying for Psychology AP, so I figured why not?

Past programs I’ve done:

COSMOS (Astronomy and Oceanography)
SSTEM and ICM (Basically local programs relating to the medical field around my area established by Stanford; one is more of a workshop-based program, the other a job-shadowing one)
Youth Diabetes Coaching (The students are the ones coaching others about diabetes)

Accidentally posted this in the wrong thread earlier. Meant to put it in this one.

It’s a great list! When it comes time to apply, combine the ones you can, and if there’s still not enough space, put the oldest ones (that you no longer do) in the "additional info” section.

Hope you’re looking at some of the combined med programs: [BS/MD Programs](Multiple Degree Programs - College Confidential Forums)

Oooh, alright then. I guess I can combine Science Bowl with Science Student Council into Science Club, since only select members in Science Bowl can become part of the Science Student Council.

And I’m not quite familiar with BS/MD programs, so I’ll look into that. I originally thought they were like those Ph.D/M.D programs.

I wonder if I have the opposite program, though. Do I look not “well-rounded” enough? Or is it fine to be more specialized in my interests? I’ve tried various other activities in the past (Key Club, Interact, Cooking Club) and have done sports such as tennis and swimming, but they weren’t passions.

Do what you’re interested in. And it says a lot about you that you’ve shown consistent interest in certain types of activities. That’s a GOOD thing!

And forget trying to second guess what the adcoms are looking for. For every one who’s looking for a “well-rounded” kid, there’s another who’d rather see a kid who’s devoted herself to one or two things.

If you’re interested in medicine, there are dozens of “combined” BS/MD programs where you can be admitted directly out of high school to both college and med school at the same time. Some are 7-year programs, so you only spend 3 years as an undergrad and then move on to med school, and others are a full eight years. The advantages, in my mind, are all the perks that come with being admitted into these programs - med school mentors, lots of shadowing/volunteering/research opportunities, special seminars/lectures just for the combined BS/MD students. And, with some of them, you go directly into the med school part of the program without having to sit for the MCAT. Anyway, there are lots of different programs - it’s probably worth looking into. (Do the research now. Most of these programs have very early fall deadlines - so you want to be prepared ahead of time.)
