I asked my director if I could alternate with the current principal chair ( and I am typically considered to be the top performer) to which he responded that it didn’t matter as the class wasn’t too concerned about seating and he did allow it. so on my common app I said I was principal chair.
Would this be considered to be lying on the common app?
Well… it seems like it is stretching it, assuming that is normally a position earned via some standardized process and you didn’t earn it that way…
but usually aren’t second chairs considered to be alternates for the principal? and plus I don’t really understand that a sophomore should be principal- my school usually does seats by seniority as a priority. everyone who is a senior was principal except me basically.the one who arranges seats is a completely different person who I think has had some kind of grudge against me since middle school…
so you do think I would get into trouble? I had already submitted my apps…
You sure have a lot of excuses to justify this to yourself…
Seniority isn’t always the way it is done. My high school band did it by playing challenges. You challenged your way up one seat at a time. Had to let 3 days lapse between challenges. Could pick from music we were playing as an ensemble, or sightreading. I earned the principal chair as a HS sophomore that way.
You do realize that the difference between principal chair and second chair of a school orchestra is about as large as a pimple on an elephant’s butt, right? That’s hardly make or break.
Whether you want to split hairs and call it lying, it’s certainly not entirely correct.
I think you should own the chair you actually earned and occupy and not tell stories about owning another one.
intparent, unfortunately, my school does not offer such challeneges- I think I should just talk with my director about this
Whether you lied or merely bent the truth, you learned something valuable about yourself: a career in politics may be in the offing if the music doesn’t pan out.
Silver lining.
Gold, perhaps.
My D was principle chair cello in her high school orchestra as a freshman and every year thereafter through senior year, which he earned by AUDITIONING.
